Controversy: The Black Lives Matter Movement
At Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana there has been protests about the Black Lives Matter movement. The Black Lives Matter movement “is a chapter-based national organization working for the validity of Black life” (Haki). The Black Lives Matter movement began in 2012. This movement is important because it is about equality. Equality is important because every life matters. The point of the Black Lives Matter movement is to show that one life does not matter more than another and that black lives just need some help and attention from everyone. So, to solve this controversy I am proposing raising awareness and small weekly meetings about the Black Lives Matter movement.
One solution for the Black Lives Matter movement is raising awareness.

First, students who volunteer to help create the t-shirts will make them say “Black Lives Matter at IU” printed largely on the front. The t-shirts will be red to represent Indiana University. The font will be bold and white with a black outlining to make the words stand out to show its importance. The t-shirts will also say “Ask me why” on the back of the t-shirts in the same font but the word “why” will be more bigger than the other words. That phrase will attract people who see their t-shirt and start a “discussion” as mentioned above. The students will then explain and more people will know about the Black Lives Matter movement and spread awareness by also getting a t-shirt. However, to be able to get these t-shirts IU students will set up a board with a brief explanation of what the Black Lives Matter movement is all about and the idea of making t-shirts for the students to wear on campus. Along with that board can be two students sitting at a table by the board to answer any questions. The two students at the table will already have their own t-shirts made to give others an idea of what they would look like. The students can be anyone who volunteers to sit at the table and can choose either in the morning or afternoon. There …show more content…
My next proposal is to make small Black Lives Matter gatherings for IU students. According to Dallas News, there was a protest in Dallas and the protesters, counter protesters, and officers came together and formed a prayer circle. A police sergeant named Hall said, “Makes me feel great to see people with such differences come together and work it out.” The word “differences” show that people can come together even though they are not exactly the same. The “differences” do not have to be physically different but can also be mentally different. Mentally different as in people with different opinions about the Black Lives Matter movement. First, the speaker of these gatherings will be someone who is well aware of the Black Matter Movement. The speaker can be anyone who volunteers and is interested about the topic. The speaker will just ask about thoughts and opinions. The gatherings will be lead by everyone who has something to share. The small meetings will not be like a classroom lectured by just one person. Also, the small meetings will not just have one person speaking because the students will easily get bored and distracted. The people who attend can share any opinions or ideas out loud or within their own group of friends. The point to be able to share with anyone around you is to get your word around and meet new people with “differences”. Next, these gatherings would

In “Why Black Lives Matter Resonates” Leonard Pitts states his belief that Martin Luther King Jr. would be happy with the “Black Lives Matter” campaign because it is beneficial for African-Americans. Pitts writes about the counter campaign, “All Lives Matter,” as being a disgrace to the civil rights movement, and concurring that Martin Luther King Jr. wouldn’t be a part of it. I cannot agree with Leonard Pitts’ conclusion that King would be completely for “Black Lives Matter” and not completely for “All Lives Matter” because I believe if King were here today he would be advocating for equality of all people.…

We foster and celebrate practices that nurture living and learning in an atmosphere of caring, respect and mutual accountability.1 The cover of the book itself is the epitome of what a community should be. On the cover, there is a picture of a young black boy in the middle of the street, who no one seems to be paying any attention. Although the picture is fixated on him, behind him seems to be a rally of some kind with thousands of people. As they march through the streets holding signs, it is a truly poignant photo. It is a sincerely inspirational sight, which Dr. Hill also describes in his book. After eighteen year-old, Michael Brown, was shot and killed by police, “...crowds of protesters appeared in Oakland, Los Angeles, Dallas, Denver, Washington, Minneapolis, Chicago, Atlanta, and New York [stood] in solidarity” (Hill 12). People were outraged about Michael Brown’s death, and most of them never even met him. It is beautiful to think that all of these people care enough to get together and try to make a change. There is a strength in numbers and those numerous protesters prove…

The shooting of Michael Brown, an event that sparked the outrage of people nationwide, was absolutely not Dr. King’s dream. Even though Brown was wrongly shot, we must think back to ourselves what Dr. King truly advocated: “We must be concerned not merely about who murdered them, but about the system, the way of life, the philosophy which produced the murderers.” The philosophy that’s being implemented on campus is the foundation of which brilliant Nobel laureates or infamous mass murderers use to create masterpieces of the century or shocking crimes. We, as students, should work together towards a solution to global warming, a solution to police brutality, and ultimately a solution to instead of discriminating against one another.…

To maintain a free society and prosper within our American version, peaceful resistance to laws made by our legislative government are imperative not only to uphold our nation's Constitution but to the people's unalienable right to free speech. The American Republic was conceived in revolution and resistance to legislature. A plethora of the original framers of the Constitution were soldiers and essential leaders of the American Revolution; these citizens fought for our new Republic during the war and absorbed its political ideology. The Declaration of Independence, brought to life by Thomas Jefferson, said that the document was simply an "expansion of the American mind." He wrote that it is the "Right of the people to alter or abolish" any government, and institute a new one that would better secure their safety and happiness, which alludes to a positively-impacted free society we now take pride in today.…

Thus it lead me to the library catalog and the ebook, “Black Revolution on Campus, ”that highlighted the movement of black college students in their protest to equal education and promotion of African-American studies and affirmative action, as well as other opportunities. The black lives matter movement is aimed to help a group of people find liberation in society that has kept them silent in the past years. This movement began with the killing of Trayvon Martin and eventually become popular with the series of unfortunate events that came after. Unfortunately many people of these minority communities have become victims of police violence but this has also only helped communities from all over the states come together as one. The purpose of the black lives matter movement is to call for a society that anti-black racism will no longer be tolerated. Community members are torn and disheartened by the structures created in society that has made it okay to judge and discriminate against others because of race or…

Black masculinity itself is a subject that in the recent years has come under scrutiny for its portrayal of the black male as violent, aggressive and oversexualised and disregarding them as emotional fully realised individuals. Due to the influence of the media in mainstream society these representations have become negative stereotypes attributed to African American men preventing them from truly discovering their identity out of the gaze of white America. With movements such as the Black Lives Matter movement (2013) created in response to the highly publicised killings of African Americans as well as their treatment at the hands of law enforcement ;also the BBDC 'Black Boys Don’t Cry "a project designed to deconstruct the ideals of black…

Since the tragic death of Mike Brown in 2014 Black Lives Matters have been protesting via social media and in the streets to raise awareness to the injustice murders of black people. While protesting is a good start for change there is barely any organization in the movement to effetely bring any real change. While the Black Lives Matter Movement has founders there are no leaders to push the movement forward. This is one of the reasons I think the Black lives Matter movement is not working. Every great movement had some type of leader to keep everyone organized and on topic such as the Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcom X with the civil rights movement and Huey P. Newton with the Black Panthers Party. If there…

There has been at least one moment in each of our lives where we realize that alone, we can’t do everything. But, within each individual is the ability to do something, and with this ability we can incite a spark in others, that can inspire them and encourage them to do something too. This is when we see one person becomes one group, sharing one goal in mind. This is when we can find the connect between our school’s message, “Power of One” and Dr. King’s contribution to civil rights. But, to make this more apparent, we must cover Dr, King’s life.…

I also want to prove that blacks need to stop thinking people owe them. I would like to know that there is information out there that shows my findings. However, I know that people will call my information a deflection on the topic they care about. I guess my question will be, “ Does black lives really matter?” This is the day and time of fast information. People recording all incidents as they happen. However, I have seen that even regular people can edit video. I do feel that if people looked at all situations with an open mind, then they will be able to see this point in a different…

The lecture by a famous Seattle activist Zarna Joshi, happened in our Humanities 150 classroom. Zarna Joshi has an activist group called “Women of Color Speak Out” with three other members with all of, sometimes they may add a member if they like her. The event had a discussion and a lecture together which was extremely interesting and entertaining. Zarna Joshi, an Indian straight women born in England, she became an activist due to wanting to control society and its stereotypes on women and race. She became a vegan because she saw the cruelty behind meat gatherings. Zarna Joshi as a women of color has been through many struggles and fights that are an everyday job for an activist. The group together with their supporters fight for climate justice, gender justice, racial justice, and just dealing with whiteness in any society not just in the United States. The group came…

I was standing in the center of a boisterous, chanting crowd. People were marching, waving their banners and posters in the air. Compelling images filled the air as voices through the microphones boomed with motivating speeches. Everybody there had some motivation, a passion to create change. Most importantly, the crowd consisted of people of all races, all ethnicities, and all professions. Whether it was the families of those who lost lives speaking through the microphones or the supporters rallying in the crowd, we were all there for one reason. That reason was change.…

Many think it is to be mad, riot and protest, which is false. Four in ten black adults strongly support the Black Lives Matter movement. Even though whites have mixed views on the Black Lives Matter movement but they do not tear it down (“On Views”). Seventy-six percent of whites support the movement. Younger white people support the movement than those who are thirty and older. Young people are more open-minded and not so filled with the things of the past.…

As I noticed with the flyers for the event “Walk A Mile In Her Shoes”, there were tons of flyers to grab people’s attentions. Even if you weren’t paying attention to the board of flyers, that one stood out because you had seen it so many times before. We tried to do the same thing by trying to get at least one flyer in every main building on campus. Another way that helped our PSA flyers stand out was by including the statistics of the violence that is happening. It’s one thing to just hang a flyer up around campus saying that there is a problem on this subject. But it’s another thing to say there’s a problem and then actually show how bad the problem is. It was eye opening for me when I read about how bad the violence against the LGBQT community was. Hopefully it will be eye opening for some of the students on campus…
