Contingency Theory of Leadership
Contingency Theory of Leadership

Description of work environment
I will describe my current real life work environment. I work for Farmers Insurance and stated out as the customer service rep. I am now writing & servicing insurance policies.

In the table below, categorize different leadership approaches that could be used in the work environment you have described. Provide different suggestions for each of the four approaches to leadership.

Every Tues night he meets friends for drinks and pool and always invites me because I am single and he is trying to get me out of the house and out having fun.
Participative approach Achievement-oriented approach
Occasionally my boss will lead in the participative approach to leadership. He will ask my opinion on things and always encourages me to come up with my own ideas… although new ideas have to be run by him before I can use them. One day I reconfigured a spreadsheet that we use for quoting auto insurance and he was not happy with me. For me it worked out really well, but for him it was too busy. So instead of saying no to my idea he allowed me to use my spreadsheet but was also have the original spreadsheet in the computer for him to use. My boss has certain theories that make his business a success. His main concept is that we need to be a proactive agency. When someone qualifies for lower rates, we automatically

As a leader, my boss encourages our team to be independent and confident thinkers and doers. She is always at the head of the projects we are working on and allows her staff to be a part of decision making and implementation of processes. Perhaps she has gained so much respect from others because she gives that same respect back to them. And yet, she is able to lead with encouragement while at the same time keeping everyone focused and on task. Successful leaders “encourage staff members to pursue lifelong learning goals and serve as coaches and mentors” (Finkelman, 2012, p. 15). My leader does not feel threatened by someone else on her team learning more and improving their own skills so they can be successful. She has been a great encouragement to me during my time at Liberty while finishing my degree.…

When I think of a traditional boss I tend to think a little of someone sitting behind a desk most of the day and barely knowing the names of the people who work for them. To be a truly good leader a boss needs to be out there with everyone every once in a while, seeing how everyone works, knowing their employees and showing them that he is not beneath the work that they do every day too. That they are not working for him, but with him.…
