Contempus Concert Critique
The ConTempus concert took place in White Auditorium on January 17, 2016. The musicians were dressed in black formal and the audience was wearing whatever they felt fit their mood. The audience was composed entirely of Spring Arbor University students and faculty. At 7:05 the group came on stage to perform and got right into it, playing their first song with no introduction. After their first piece they paused to explain what they were doing and where they were from. The group consisted of four string instruments, two violinists, a violist, and a cellist, all women, two Asians (Mongolians it seemed) and two Caucasians. In terms of technical music, their music was very extensive. They played some complex songs that were focused more on the …show more content…
This music was very relaxing and easy to listen to. It was interesting because I actually was sitting with friends who are not even in Music foundations this semester, and one of them is a violist and got called out by Dr. Kim for being an excellent viola player. My sister is a violin and viola player, so I have grown up going to orchestra concerts of hers, but it was amazing to hear high quality/professional musicians perform live. The emotion and feeling they put into their playing was spectacular and they each had their own way of expressing themselves in their playing. Somehow, this group of women is able to meld these emotions in harmony to make the smaller group even more entertaining than a large orchestra. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and was glad to have the opportunity to enjoy higher class music in the comfort of my own campus. Overall, I can only imagine how a full sized ConTempus group would sound. The best part about their concert was the variety of pieces they played. I feel like one usually goes to a concert and ends up only hearing one style of music the whole time he or she is there. They composed themselves very professionally, but did not take themselves so seriously as to turn the younger college crowd off. It was a great way to spend a Saturday

It was a small semi-professional performing group that consists of around 28 members, yet there was a wide range of instrumentation. There were 9 violins, 3 violas, 3 cellos, 1 bass, 1 flute, 2 oboe, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 French horns, 2 trumpets and 1 percussion. The performers were dressed very neatly. For men, they wore black tuxedo, white shirt with bow tie and black shoes. For women, they dressed in white top with black pants or dress and black shoes.…

A good electric guitar player is part of the group as well. They also at one point had a woman with a nice singing voice perform with them. She sing several songs with them. Next, I found out why they had the Bad New Jazz & Blues Orchestra again at the festival. In the band, one member acted as their conductor. Several individuals play saxophone. A couple of individuals plays horns. Three trumbones are involve, a woman sings well in the band and unlike Space Train had key board player in it. The trumpet players were good and I am not what you call a fan of them. In fact, I like the singing of this woman better than the singer in Space Train. It was very well organized orchestra. People in the audience must have agree because a couple…

I have never heard such music as this and watch the players articulate the movements and timing necessary to be able to play such difficult pieces as these. Their sound was like a whole orchestra playing with them but it was only four players. It was a whole new experience for me. These pieces were beautiful but I guess I just didn’t have an ear for the changes in pitch and frequency. It was quite odd but also added to the pieces. I can’t wait to go to other concerts. The atmosphere is unlike any other. This experience unmatched by other concert experiences I’ve…

On the night of Monday, October 16th, I had the opportunity to perform as part of the Wind Ensemble in the SHS Fall Concert. The ensemble consisted of woodwinds, brass, and percussion. Our band presented two pieces in the concert: a program and an overture. Although we were not as prepared for the concert as I’d hoped, I opine that the wind ensemble performed rather successfully.…

Overall, I enjoyed my attendance at the concert choir held at Benedictine University. The show was well done and I could tell that the members of the choir worked very hard in preparation. Although there were eight songs, the concert went by fairly quick. There was only one baby grand piano in the middle of the stage, but other than that, it was interesting to see that no other instruments were used except for their own voices and they were able to project an excellent performance for the…

It was Monday, November 17 cold and snowy outside Ophelia Paris Concert Hall, Truman State University but inside it was all warmth and light as Elaine AuBuchon started the Double Reed Recital. Having not been to any actual classical music concert, I was excited to hear the talent that we have in our campus. I took it upon myself to go with an open mind, without having any previous predispositions that would affect my reaction to the concert. I just wanted to go in there, not knowing anything about the concert, and see what I hear in the music. This concert was open to anyone and free admission. The program presented a variety of styles…

For my humanities report, I attended the Wind Ensemble concert at the Timko Barton lobby on October 8, 2015. The concert was so inspiring and refreshing for me since I love music and am currently studying music. Sitting with some many people and listening to beautiful music from a variety of genres was so restoring to the soul. Dr. John Jenkins, the director, was so motivating in every piece of music and of the program. The concert program ran smoothly as the ensemble band transitioned gradually to each different song piece. In addition the scenery added to the peaceful presence during the show. Since the concert took place in the lobby of the music hall, people saw the bright lights coming from the ceiling and they also enjoyed to majestic surrounding of the large glass windows. The Wind Ensemble concert event was a smoothing time to reflect on…
