Consequences Of Sin In The Scarlett Letter By Nathaniel Hawthorne

The Scarlet Letter is an intriguing book about the consequences of sin. The three main characters of this book are Hester Prynne, Pearl, and Arthur Dimmesdale. At the beginning of the book, the reader sees that Hester has committed a sin, as she is displayed in public with two marks of shame, a baby, and on her chest, the letter A in scarlet and gold embroidery. This is because Hester had committed adultery. In the beginning of the book the man who had also taken part in the sin is unknown to everyone except for Hester Prynne. As the story unfolds, however, the reader begins to see who the man was. The ways that the two characters handle their sin are quite different from each other. After standing on a platform in town for a few hours to be mocked by the townspeople, Hester is brought back to her prison cell. She was visited at night by a man named Roger Chillingworth. Chillingworth is Hester’s husband under a pseudonym, who was thought to be dead, as Hester had come over without him, and Roger had never showed up. He asks Hester to tell him who was the man that had committed adultery with her, so that Chillingworth may get revenge. She does not feel as though she should leave, rather, she feels that she deserves to be punished for her sin. At first, the townspeople ridicule her and make her the object of sin, making sure that their children know what she has done, even if they do not understand. Little Pearl, Hester’s daughter, is also made an outcast, for she is the mark of the scarlet letter. Hester does however, possess a particular talent for embroidery, and begins embroidering and sewing for many people in town.
