Costovertebral tenderness (CVA) is a medical test in which pain is elicited by percussion of the area of the back overlying the kidney. Indirect fist percussion causes the tissues to vibrate instead of producing a sound. To perform this test, place one hand over the 12th rib at the costovertebral angle on the back and thump that hand with the ulnar edge of the other fist. The person normally feels a thud but no pain. Sharp pain occurs with inflammation of the kidney or perinephric area. Because kidneys lies beneath this area and tapping disturbs the inflamed tissue causing pain. It is important to assess CVA tenderness in patients who presents with low back pain as it will help the provider to make an appropriate differential…

When I began the intervention phase with JY, he was able to perform bed mobility and sit at the edge of the bed (EOB) with minimal assistance. JY’s goal for therapy was to return home and cook for his family. After the initial evaluation, I designed the plan of care so JY would qualify for inpatient rehabilitation. Additionally, I recommended outpatient physical therapy once JY achieved stated goals or was discharged from inpatient rehabilitation. JY’s medical team worked to stabilize his medical status; improve bowel/bladder continence; and increase his level of independence in communication/cognition, mobility, and performance of activities of daily living (ADLs). JY’s initial examination was performed on Day 1 of his admission in the ICU. JY’s physical therapy interventions were applied Day 3 of his hospital stay. Physical, occupational, and speech therapy worked collaboratively to coordinate and provide rehabilitation for JY that integrated all of the functional skills he would need to achieve functional goals and return home to his family in an active role.…

Name: Nurses on a day to day basis take care of patients, and the most important part of treatment for a patient is preventive care. The name of the organization I chose is called the Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurses Society (WOCN). Their goal is to promote wound, ostomy, and continence care by educating nurses with clinical and research information that includes the best ways to care for their patients. This society is the most trusted globally to provide accurate information for wound, ostomy, and continence care, so its members work unswervingly to provide the best evidence-based practices. As we can see, preventive care is always the main priority for this society, because being careful with delicate situations such as the wound,…

Sweat dripping down your face. Your body burns, you’re tired, weak, and ready to give up. But something inside of you says keep going, don’t stop! So you keep pushing until you can no longer push anymore. The feeling of accomplishment is unreal. Your body feels defeated, but your soul has the feeling of a champion. There is much more to working out than just a gym and equipment. It’s a mind set, a desire, a go all out attitude. Without that, you are nothing.…

Often times the management of chronic wounds can become challenging for clinicians. In the article by Sibbald et al (1) they emphasize that wound healing should be achieved through an interprofessional team approach where the focus is holistic, focusing not only on the patient’s wound but on the patient as a whole. Once the cause of the wound is identified, the wound can be classified into three categories: healable, maintenance and non healable (1). Referring to the wound bed preparation paradigm discussed in Sibbald et al (2) I will discuss a management approach for each wound category.…
