Conflict Paper
The company that I am currently employed with is a restaurant and catering company. I don’t wish to enclose the name of the company, due to that fact that it’s still my place of employment; the replica name of the company will be Doe’s Diner and Catering Company Inc. (Doe’s). Doe’s was founded in 1998 when a couple decided they wanted to open a diner like restaurant in central Durham, North Carolina. The sole reason for opening the restaurant was because of the company the husband was working for wasn’t doing well and he wanted a change in life. The wife and current owner was a sales representative for US Foods and believed that it too was a great idea. The couple divorced and the wife took full ownership of the debt written restaurant and catering company. I am employed solely under the catering company. The location of the restaurant and catering company was moved into a bigger space three years ago. I have been employed with Doe’s for one year and three months. The owner does her best with what she actually knows about the food industry. The general manager started as a server and became the manager of the restaurant and “event” manager for catering; she too does her best with what she knows catering staff including myself. In a given day we prep and delivery to over fifteen doctor offices, not including banquet style functions. There isn’t an in kitchen catering manager, nor a weekly schedule of the catering employees. There are conflicts at Doe’s just as there are at any other places of employment. In order to fix them one of the negotiation strategies could be used. Negotiation “is the process in which two or more interdependent individuals or groups who perceive that they have both common and conflicting goals state and discuss proposals and preferences for specific terms of a possible agreement. Negotiation often includes a combination of compromise, collaborations, and possibly some forcing conflict-handling styles,” (Hellriegel, Slocum

It is through this that social order can deteriorate into conflict and anarchy with disturbing ease; it is a fear of difference and is not always easy to distinguish the innocent from the guilty in contesting situations. One of the more common ways that we tend to use to deal with potential conflict is appeal to the common goals of both the organization and its employees. Our managing director is not great at dealing with conflict and his preferred method is avoidance. However, since my induction in March of last year, I have encouraged him to deal with situations as and before they occur more. He can now see the benefits of this and works hard to deal with situations as or before they arise. If he senses unhappiness or potential conflict with regards to a situation, he now calls the person or persons in question in to his office to discuss. He encourages his employees to look at the bigger picture rather than the small one - the issue. By doing this and having them focus on the overall aim and objective of the company, he…

Conflict means a struggle or problem between two opposing groups or individuals. There are two types of conflict: internal and external conflict. An internal conflict is a struggle that is internalized and deals with choices, consequences, or emotions. An internal conflict is a man vs. self struggle. An external conflict is a struggle between the protagonist and another character against nature or some outside force. External conflicts are either man verses man, man verses nature, or man verses society. Various examples of internal and external conflicts can be shown in Guy de Maupassant’s “The Necklace,” Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game,” and O.Henry’s, “The Gift of the Magi.”…

The issue of bullying has drawn a sufficient amount of attention to allow it to grow into a national concern. As defined by Oxford Dictionaries, a bully is “a person who uses strength or influence to harm or intimidate those who are weaker” (Oxford Dictionary n.d.). From being tormented, socially ignored, and physically assaulted to being harassed on the Internet, the issue of bullying appears to be heightening with no signs of stopping. With cases of bullying on the rise, it has become clear that, not only are males the targets of bullying, but so too are females. It is a common misunderstanding that males are the most prominent bullies, but in fact, females can be just as ruthless, especially in cases of cyber bullying.…

As the owner paid the salaries of all the others, she is the assigned leader rather than an emergent leader. I paid more attention when the owner is communicating with servers or the chiefs. She used many powers when communicating with them. Giving rewards is the one she liked to use frequently. I saw many times that she told the chief if the sales exceed some kind of line, she would took them to go eating at Red Lobster or somewhere else. At the same time, she is not so rigorous and have a very east working environment for the workers. She always talked about how her lives in old days were like and what is the custom in hometown. As a result, both the chiefs and the servers like to talk with her and talk about a lot of their own lives. Using this way, the owner can know more what her workers are like and thy sometimes they are in a down time. Mrs. Liu thought that this communication with her employees are very important and this does not only develop their personal relationship but also make the employees to work more involuntarily for her. Conflict is something that happens often in my organization. However, there are different styles to manage conflict and some are more effective than others. Before I explain these different styles, it is important to understand what conflict is. "Conflict occurs whenever disagreements exist in a social situation over issues of substance or whenever emotional antagonisms create frictions between individuals or groups" (Schermerhorn, Hunt, Osborn, 2002 pg.127, Conflict). There are two distinctive types of conflict, "substantive conflict" and "emotional conflict".…

Organizational conflict is a state of discord caused by the actual or perceived opposition of needs, values and interests between people working together. Conflict takes many forms in organizations. There is the inevitable clash between formal authority and power and those individuals and groups affected. There are disputes over how revenues should be divided, how the work should be done, and how long and hard people should work. There are jurisdictional disagreements among individuals, departments, and between unions and management. There are subtler forms of conflict involving rivalries, jealousies, personality clashes, role definitions, and struggles for power and favor. There is also conflict within individuals between competing needs and demands to which individuals respond in different ways.…
