Conflict In The Great Gatsby
There is no relationship without a conflict. Each relationship is unique and their conflicts would vary from one to another. This essay will examine the different causes, consequences and see whether the conflicts are resolved through analyzing Extremely loud and incredibly close, Othello, The Social Network and The Great Gatsby.

In Extremely loud and incredibly close, there is a conflict between Oskar and his mother. They have a tense relationship ever since Dad’s death. It is caused by Oskar's self-obsession with his own grief and his emotional immaturity. He thinks his mom is moving on too soon. He overlooks how his mom needs some comfort too. “Mom was with Ron in the living room, listening to music too loud and playing board

The conflict between Oskar and his mom in Extremely loud and incredibly close resolves at the end because they both truly love each other deep inside. When they fight or have misunderstanding and hurt each other, they hurt themselves too. At the end, Oskar and his mom have a cathartic moment and reconcile. They talk about their feelings and secrets e.g. dad called both of them on that day. They are both now trying to move on and understand each other more as Oskar says “I promise I'm going to be better soon.” Oskar also realizes how Ron and his mom met each other and he accepts him “it's ok, if you fall in love again.”

In Othello, there is a conflict between a couple, Othello and Desdemona. The conflict initially starts by an envious man, Iago, not by the two lovers themselves conversely to Oskar and his mom. Iago is jealous of Othello for the reasons, he made Cassio his lieutenant instead of him and marrying Desdemona. Iago tries to ruin Othello’s life as he says “I follow him to serve my turn upon him.” Iago poisons Othello’s mind against Desdemona by bringing up how Desdemona deceived

The conflict between Daisy and Tom is seen through the entire movie and is caused by their marriage based on the money and social status whereas in Othello the conflict is started by Iago and in The Social Network by Mark's arrogance. Tom and Daisy cheat on each other (Tom with Myrtle and Daisy with Gatsby.) Daisy knows about her husband's infidelity but still put up with him and acts obliviously e.g. Daisy ignores the fact that Myrtle calls Tom when she and Tom are at home. In contrast with Othello, he finds Desdemona’s supposed affair with Cassio intolerable whereas Daisy’s got to accept what’s going on between Tom and Myrtle. Similar to Daisy, Desdemona has to accept her husband’s action e.g. Othello murdered her, she says “Nobody, I myself.” Daisy and Desdemona has to accept whatever their husbands do. In Othello and The Great Gatsby time, “women were expected to tolerate what was going on around them and act like they don't know much,” as Nick says. In modern day, Erica stands up for herself and express her thought. Erica won’t put up with or submit to Mark’s attitude like Daisy and Desdemona. In comparison between Tom, Othello and Mark, they are not tolerable of the idea their wife or girlfriend having affairs with other ( Daisy with Gatsby, Desdemona with Cassio and Erica with Bobby, the doorman.) This shows the inequality of men and women’ rights. Daisy and Tom’s

His mother and he depended on each other for everything. However, Aaron said that they were not always very close to each other. Aaron did not get the opportunity to talk about issues with her, such as being bullied or the talk about the birds and the bees. Aaron had to keep to himself, since no one was around. He learned to be a listener, not a talker. Although Aaron and his mother did not have deep conversations, they loved each other deeply, and they both knew it. A prime example was that Aaron’s mother came to his senior day of baseball, the first game she ever came to, and that greatly touched his heart. The most memorable time of Aaron’s life was two days before he left for Northwestern. Aaron and his mother had a real, deep talk. She explained to him how much she would miss him, for he was all she had. She apologized for the way he had to be raised, in poor conditions with no father. Although it was a sad conversation, Aaron loved it, and he said, “Nothing will break the bond between me and my mother.”…

The exploration of what it means to be human is heavily focused on in Jonathan Safran Foer’s Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close. The story follows a nine-year-old boy whose father died in the 9/11 attacks as he struggles to find some reason behind it, wondering along the way about existence and, more importantly, human emotion. All humans experience a range of emotions, from happiness to anger and everything in between. One of the most prominent human experiences is loss and the grief that follows it. The grieving process presents itself in many ways, and it is different for everyone. Through examining the text via formalism, which focuses solely on the text itself and not on the author on any other element, it becomes clear that the varying ways of mourning and receiving closure are well represented. The setting, plot, and structure used in the text all tie together the examination of grief as part of what it means to be human—everyone deals with grief, but each person must find a way to do so.…

The first relationship introduced in the novel is Tom and Daisy Buchanan. Tom is a very powerful domineering man, very self-centered and self-absorbed. While Daisy is a charming, beautiful lady, with a thrilling voice, she is very self-centered as well. Tom and Daisy's relationship is undergoing stress. When Daisy notices that her finger is hurt she says, "You did it, Tom… That's what I get for marrying a brut of a man, a great big hulking physical specimen (Tom interrupts) "I hate that word hulking…even in kidding." "Hulking," insisted Daisy. (P 16) Daisy knows how to push all of Tom's buttons and how hard to push them. Daisy tells Nick how cynical she is about everything, she shows her views in the statement "She told me it was a girl and I turned my head away and wept… all right I'm glad it's girl. And I hope she'll be a fool – that's the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool." (P 21). It's rumored that Tom is having an affair, "Tom's got some woman in New York." (P 19), and from what Daisy says she would just rather not notice what is really happening. Daisy and Tom never seem at peace with each other, just in an oblivious state where nothing can change them. They know "their place" is together; it suits society, they are perfectly matched. Daisy goes astray with Gatsby. "As he (Tom) left the room again she got up and went over to Gatsby and pulling his face down, kissing him on the mouth…You know I love you." (PP 122-123) Daisy uses Gatsby to rebel against Tom's infidelity, but would never even consider leaving him, especially for an old flame. They are so materialistic; they except their flawed relationship as normal.…

In this astounding novel, the reader becomes familiar with the main protagonist, Oskar Schell. An inquisitive nine-year-old boy who had recently lost his father to the tragedies of the 9/11 attack. Throughout the novel, the impact of Thomas Schell’s (Oscar’s father) death does a great deal of damage to Oscar’s psyche causing him to pursue an adventure, in the hopes to solve a mystery that his father had left behind for him. From the very beginning of the novel, we see how the tragic accident impacted young Oscar’s state of mind. It is one of the greatest books ever written and one of the best books that I've ever read. The Great Gatsby can be interpreted in many ways. There are many themes but the main theme of the book, in my personal opinion, is the states the American Dream. One of the literary devices author uses to interpret central idea of the text is setting. Setting is the surroundings or environment of anything. Fitzgerald’s novel is set in the 1920s also known as Roaring Twenties, a period of sustained economic prosperity. All actions are occurring in Long Island, New York, Queens (Valley of Ashes) and Manhattan in the summer…
