Statement of intention: The purpose of this writing to inform the reader about war and battle and what might be going through a soldiers head whilst in the midst of warfare. The audience for this writing piece is anyone who is interested in conflicts or wants to gain a better understand of warfare and soldiers. It is written in the form of a narrative so it comprehensive and easy to understand.
We fear many things in life, fear of loss, fear of failure, fear of being hurt and fear of the unknown. What I fear is much greater than all of these. I fear Death. Death the ultimate ending, or in some culture the beginning. Fear is literally a strong emotion caused by impending danger. Impending is the key word in the definition, meaning that the danger is not real. We are in the here and now but our minds are somewhere off in the future. Fear is something that might happen, not something that is happening now. FEAR is an acronym for “False Evidence Appearing Real”.
Sitting in the trenches I sense that I am not the only man with this fear. We all have different fears and we have different reasons to be here, reasons to keep us going, reasons that keep us alive. For some it is pride, patriotism, tradition or even hope, hop that they will be able to make a difference in the world. My reasons are completely separate to all of these, mine is faith. Faith in humanity, faith in people, faith in our leaders and faith in my country. My motives are purely selfish, so I don’t expect in honour or bravery award. I am just an ordinary man and I am here fighting because I want to be. I have on a few possession but each one of them special giving me something, my uniform gives my strength, my weapon gives me power, my badge and countries logo give me pride. But being alongside my brothers in arms gives me courage.
