Confirm Physical Health Status – Introduction and Chemistry

Anatomy – Structure
Physiology – Function
Path Physiology – Signs and symptoms of diseases and how they affect body functions

Levels of structural complexity:
1. Atoms
2. Molecules
3. Cells
4. Tissues
5. Organs
6. Systems

Levels of organization:
1. Chemical – atoms combine to form molecules
2. Cells – basic unit of life
3. Organs – tissues are then arranged into organs
4. Organ systems – is groups of organs
5. The human organism

Homeostasis: is the maintenance of a stable internal environment Control mechanisms: help maintain homeostasis
1. Receptor – responds to stimuli and sends information to the control centre 2. Control centre – analyzes the information and determines appropriate response 3. Effector – provides a means for response to the stimulus Positive feedback mechanisms – the original stimulus continues resulting in increasing responses (Blood clotting and birth control) Negative feedback mechanisms – the response to a stimulus therefore reverses the effect of that stimulus, keeping the system in a steady state and maintaining homeostasis (Temperature falling below 37 degrees)

Internal communication systems:
Nervous system
Endocrine systems
External communication system:
Special senses
Endocrine system

Blood: Transports substances throughout body in blood vessels that consists of plasma (is mainly water with dissolved substances) and blood cells (erythrocytes, leukocytes and platelets)

Blood vessels (arteries, arterioles, capillaries, veins and venules): split into pulmonary and systemic circulation

Heart: a muscular sack which pumps blood around the body under involuntary control

Lymphatic System: is a series of vessels situated between the blood capillaries and cells - it disposes of bacteria and debris
- it transports lymph back to the bloodstream

Nervous System:
Central Nervous System (brain and spinal cord)...
