Condom Machines on Campus Condom machines on campus, who would have thought that there would be a need to promote safe sex in today 's society. We live in a society now where sex is everywhere. It is on the radio, on the TV, and it is even on some cartoon shows. College life can be summed up into three words; Freedom, Freedom, and Freedom. With that freedom students are more likely to subject to activities that they would not normally do at or around home. Condom machines should be on campus because it promotes safe sex, serves as a convenience for campus bound students, and it would help to prevent unwanted pregnancies. In the Yahoo India News ("Students against condom-vending machine on campus"), critics feel that these machines will encourage more sexual activities among students. However, this machine can not encourage sex any more than the media already has. In fact, there is a college that voted to reject the vending machines; as stated in The Body ("Administrators Veto Condom Vending Machines"). If students are going to engage in pre-marital sex, then having this machine is a way to begin a habit of protecting themselves. You can take a horse to the pond for water, but you can not make him drink. In other words, just telling these students it is not ok to have pre-martial sex is one thing (if they listen) but, telling then showing them how to be safe if they decide to do so is another. In today 's society there are so many STD 's now that are permanent and there are some that are fatal. Why continue to loose people to STD 's when they can be shown how to help prevent the spread of them? There are a few colleges that do not allow their freshman students to have cars on campus. If two students are about to engage in a sexual activity and realize that neither has any protection, most will not stop. Neither party will want to get up and redress themselves to take a ride to the store. Therefore with the machines conveniently located on campus, they will not see it as a problem to take those view minutes to obtain a condom. As a society we teach girls early on that they are not to get pregnant at a young age. They are told to get an education, get a job, get married, and then have a baby. If unwanted pregnancy happens, some girls will drop out of school. There are a few that will take the inexpensive route and go to a clinic to have an abortion. However, that can lead to infections or the inability to have children at all. It could also lead to emotional distress, and to think all of that could have been prevented with this small convenience. There is no guarantee that these machines will be used; however, the contents are 99.9% effective if used properly. We all know that the only safe sex is no sex. The entertainment world today makes sex seem like it is okay and that this is the normal thing to do. Installing condom machines will send the message that abstinence is best, but if that is not an option then at least be safe about it.

Comprehensive Sexual Education What has happened to today’s society that we are opposed to condoms because they might entice sex? When has allowing our youth to practice unsafe sex over safe sex been okay? We often think because we supply kids with condoms, birth control, and talks, that we are giving them permission to have sex, when in fact we are merely trying to protect them from STDs and pregnancy. We do not need to scare kids, but we do need to provide them with information about safe sex practices and what can happen if they do plan to explore their sexual urge. Facts are the most important thing we can offer those select few of youth who wish to engage in sex. Since when has providing information been a bad thing? Most schools and education environments that do encourage any sort of sexual education, teach kids to “just say no”. Throughout time, ratings have shown that teaching the abstinence only education doesn’t affect the rates at which teenagers decide to have sex. Though comprehensive sex education doesn’t stop kids from having sex, it does however teach them how to participate in safe sex. Teenagers in today’s society are not stupid. When they are told by teachers that abstinence is the only way that they will not get a STD, they know they are being lied to or misled. Giving teenagers’ information about the risks of different types of sexual behavior can help them make informed decisions about sex. The most effective programs are not the ones that try to divert teens from sex completely but rather the ones that try to steer teens away from dangerous sexual behaviors.
