Concussion

Entertainment in the United States is a major part of our society, and it generates billions of dollars each year. One of the biggest forms of entertainment in the United States is football. On every level, football games bring in large sums of money because of the violence, fast pace and emotional aspects of the sport. Most people want to see that “big hit,” which gets everyone excited. It’s this excitement that makes football so entertaining. The general public knows that constantly getting your head banged around for five months out of every year is not good for your brain, but few know what serious damage it can cause for the rest of one's life. Will Smith portrays a humble man who seems to be experiencing defeat due to constant failure with getting his discovery recognized by the NFL. The movie Concussion shows Dr. Omalus struggle with the National Football League to recognize Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy(CTE) as a result of playing football for a long period of time. Concussion is based on a true story, and the things that Dr. Omalu went through for the truth to be known. …show more content…
If the NFL made a big deal about concussions and scared everyone, then they could lose money. Losing fans and players is something the National Football League wants to avoid at all costs. That is the main reason why Dr. Omalu went through such a struggle. The fact that Dr. Omalu is facing to the right instead of directly at the viewer shows the viewer that he lacks power.     Concussions cause the dangerous disease CTE that has already claimed the lives of many athletes in the NFL and in other sports. We are doing research on CTE but a lot more needs to be done. If the NFL is going to be safer they need to relinquish all of their information and research on player brain injuries. Some good things are being done to rule changes to make the game safer, but it is still not enough. There is a fine line however between changing rules and changing the game, which the NFL will have to navigate carefully. One of the better answers to these brain injuries is to improve the helmet protecting the head. Many developers have made ingenious new ideas to combat the concussion epidemic in football.     In the film the NFL relied on Dr. Maroon’s advice, thereby giving him authority over a disease he knew nothing about. Dr. Maroon’s voice, the NFL’s and others who disliked Dr. Omalu’s conclusions became the majority. The problem with this is that the majority is not always correct.
