Concert Review: Collaboration Concert
COLLABORATION CONCERT

Collaboration dance pieces are always a joy to watch, especially when the performers dance as if it was their last performance. On December 11, 2013, I had a chance to witness the Collaboration Concert of the dance departments of the two phenomenal schools of Cass Technical High School and Renaissance High School. And may I state, both schools brought the talent that resembles that of professionals. The concert involved thirteen performances of the young, but talented dancers. Renaissance Dance Workshop, Cass Tech Dance Workshop, Renaissance Dance 5, Cass Tech Dance 5, and Cass Tech Dance 3 performed. Renaissance Dance Workshop danced to five pieces. These pieces included: Statement Made, Silent Echo, Let’s Get Busy, Transparent, and Disordered Links. Statement Made was choreographed by Zandria Lucas. Music was by Frahm and Muller. This piece was pure genius in my opinion, it was

The music was by The Weekend. I really enjoyed this performance. The performance was chilling, I could really convey that the dancers put their absolute all in this performance. As the dancers danced I felt as they were telling the story that the artist of the song was telling. This performance was one of my favorites of the night. Disordered Links was choreographed by Demetrius Shields and the music was by Kramer and the Machine. This performance was a mixture of hip-hop style and modern style. This performance was also thought-provoking, meaning my only focus was that stage in which the dancers resided. Renaissance Dance 5 performed one performance and to be completely honest this performance alone, had me wanting more from this particular group. The best part of the performance was the energy that dances exhilarated the audience the whole performance. The choreography was created by Shanelle Napolean. Music was by Delta Ray, which foreshadows the title of the piece which was, Delta

The piece I enjoyed the least was “‘Tarantella’ from August Bournonville’s Napoli”. I found it distracting how in the piece the dancers that weren’t dancing were standing on the side, still visible. They were still on the stage distracting me from the dancers in the center. It was distracting to have them still visible on stage and not behind the curtain, backstage.…

In Fall 2012 there was a production called Jubilation taken place in El Camino College in the Campus Theatre. The Dance consist of many different styles of dancing from African dance by Nichole “Nittche” Thompson Spirit Within, to Tango as demonstrated in La Revancha Del Tango, choreographed by Imara Quinonez. One of the most common and best performed dances that was presented in the production were The Gift and Broadway Bound, choreographed by Bernice Boseman. Broadway Bound consisted of twelve dancers, and performed as a single group of girls, a single group of guys, and girls and guys dancing together. However, in the performance of The gift there was just one guy that performed his solo.…

The lighting effects used were alternating pulses between two and three orange lights on the psyche. The light’s timing matched the song and the color matched the dancers outfit. The style of dance for this piece was jazz with a few hip hop and lyrical incorporations. Of the six elements of choreography, three stood out to me: levels, group relationships and size of movements. Similarly to “One Dance” many transitions from high to medium and low levels such as hip sways, dips, turns, kicks, rolls, drops, flips, splits, laying down, rolls, turns, leaps, flips and tilts were used. The group relations in this piece can also be juxtaposed to “Words of a Love Song”. Performing this piece took a group effort; this dance featured several roll offs and partner styled moves. At some point during the dance, everyone had a solo moment and variations of the same movs were used between the girls. For majority of the dance, large, technically advanced moves were used and the girls used levels and traveling to cover as much space as possible. The professionalism was well in this dance. There were moments where someone may have been too early or late, but no real mistakes were made. The dancers were precise and went full out. You could tell they were performers. I liked this piece, it was sassy, fun and…

It was up close and personal. All I could do is reminisce on the discipline of my dance training as I wiggled in my seat with anticipation waiting for the curtain to rise. I could write about the performance from beginning to end, but I choose not to. However, I do want to write about a segment of the performance that evoked a riveting, yet somber mood that struck me to my core. Home. (2011) choreographed by Rennie Harris (assisted by fellow choreographer Nina Flagg) who has a Hip-Hop dance company called the Rennie Harris Puremovement he founded in 1992. Music by Dennis Ferrer and Raphael Xavier - Underground is My…

My favorite dance was the women’s jingle dance. Personally, I felt that the Jingle dress stands as musical instrument itself because of the metal clinking. In other words, a simple dance movement such as crossing the dancer feet can produce beautiful music along with the sound of the drums. It was interesting to see the women dances to move and stop their fetes exactly when the drum beats.…

I loved the way the man effortlessly leaped about the stage. It seemed as if all he did was effortless yet beautiful, and I was able to easily understand what he was trying to convey. My least favorite piece was “When We Fly”. I was able to understand that the dancers were attempting to portray birds, but I felt it was slightly jumpy; as one dancer would leave the stage, another would come back with enough time for an awkward moment to pass. There were many solos and group parts, and though it was interesting, I felt it was a little choppy and in that, it made me uncomfortable to…

Attending the Spring Dance concert was a fun learning experience. I am glad that this was a required assignment for this dance class because if it was not required I am sure I would not have attended . The variety of dances have taught me different things, and one of them is that you do not have to do complex moves in order to dance. The dance I have decided to write about is Voicing Acceptance choreographed my Nancy Sorensen. There are many reasons why I have chosen to do my paper on this specific dance. I will discuss how the sound or movement, lighting, movement and females/males contribute to the overall success of the dance piece.…

The stage was large that fitted about seven or more dancers, the setting of stage was dark and the camera and spotlight were only showing the movements of dancers. The dancers or performers were wearing simple outfits in yellow. The dance begin with performers lying facing the ceiling then slowly rises up with some basic dynamic movements then they were four people dancing at the back row, and three people were dancing in front row. The dancers were male and females. Some gestures were repetitive, but not in a boring way. The movement patterns was easy to follow, it is kind of modern dance and perhaps mixed with ballet. It does not seem to content hip-hop or cultural dance moves. The movements were some simple like walking, running, bending then rise up sort of movement at the beginning. The movements are not technically challenging for…

The first technical element that really stood out to me was the lighting. Since the festival featured so many dancers and so many schools, there was very little scenic design elements. Instead, many pieces featured lighting to both enhance the drama of the piece and to act as the set as well. The piece Where the Pavement Ends from California State University Fullerton used the light as scenery. The piece started with a stark down light that encapsulated all of the dancers. This confined the dancers to one specific area. The light then went to a flood, providing the dancers with a wider “stage” to dance on. The use of lighting acted as the set for the dancer which was both effective and visually stunning. Lighting was also used to enhance the dramatic nature of each dance. The piece Salt and Light from Whitworth College used the lighting to enhance the meaning of the piece. The dancers were each portrayed as grains of salt, all moving and scattering around the stage like individual salt granules would if poured onto a surface. The light poured in from the sides as each group of dancers emerged. This not only emphasized the dancers beautiful lines, but it helped portray the feeling that salt was being continuously poured. Although a lot of the light was extremely similar due to the festival constraints, it was used extremely effectively in each piece I saw. It never hindered a performance, in fact added a great deal of meaning to…
