Concert Critique: Black Violin
Concert Critique

Kanye West meets Beethoven is the only way to describe the three gentlemen who make up the sensational violinist duo known as Black Violin. Kev Marcus and Wil B are the violinists and are accompanied by DJ TK. Black Violin has created incredible synergy between classical and Hip-Hop music. They have created beautiful music like I have never heard before. They first made their big splash when they won the 2005 “Apollo Legends” contest in the famous Apollo Theater in Harlem, NY. They take the hip-hop culture and music and blend it together with the classical genre, and trust me your ears will thank you for taking them to the show. I admit I am not a huge fan of violins and the music they can create, but hip-hop is my life

They attempted everything from Jay-Z to Biz Markie and excelled in recreating the songs while the whole time added there own flavor to the music. Hearing you favorite Jay-Z songs played by violin is an experience in itself. They use the violins to recreate the sample that each song would use and had DJ TK add heavy bass to create music that takes control of your hips and forces you to dance, and I don’t dance. Kev Marcus and Wil B are incredible violinists with a rare talent that nobody can recreate. There chemistry on stage together rivaled that of the chemistry of some of the greatest groups such as Rolling Stones, The Beatles, or even the hip-hop legends The Wu Tang Clan. You could really tell they have been playing together for 12 years. The real show began when they decided to perform some of their own music. When they played their song “Brandenburg” (I looked up their music after the show and found out all the names) I really became a fan of their music. The violins along with the DJ scratches and drum kits used on the track are sensational; it was like I witnessed a musical masterpiece being created before my very eyes. The sounds the violins created sounded similar to those of large orchestra groups playing at an Opera House. They not only use violins, I’m guessing they add the snares and kicks with the help of a drum machine. The violin duo attacked the music

In 2005 Kanye West released “Roses” on his second studio album titled “Late Registration.” Though the composition is classified as hip-hop, it delves into many other genres and niches as it encompasses a wide-ranging mix of blues, rock, R&B, and many others. The extensive collaboration between West and film score producer Jon Brion during the making of the album resulted in a very unique orchestral-like sound thanks to the hiring of a full string section during production. The entirety of the album could be considered a breakthrough as it redefined the genre and what typical hip-hop was expected to sound like by juxtaposing heavy hip-hop beats with orchestral strings. It is this contributing factor that makes it so difficult to compare his musical style to that of any other artists.…

David Garrett once said, “The violin part is d---ed good. Once the violin enters the music feels so heavy, as if all of us in the audience almost have to hold our breaths from the sadness and tragedy that is being displayed. As the movement goes on the notes get higher, but are not relieved from any seriousness. This is an amazing example of how music can display tone without a single word or explanation. Grace Mei-En Ho, “an active soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States and Asia”, executes excellent technique during the extremely low parts of this movement. This movement was my favorite because it invoked an intense feeling that I could easily see wasn’t only felt by…

The viola player tapping the viola with the bow to make a sound like blink blink blink was creative in my eyes. It was interesting to see a beautiful piece played with only three instruments. The song is so beautiful that it sounds like music you would hear in a fairy tale forests. I liked the piece “Soft Watches” by Ileana Perez-Valazquez. It was a creative and fun idea to make the piece based off the painting Salvador Dali’s famous painting “Persistence of Memories”.…

When thinking of orchestral performances, one possibly thinks of stiff, formal environments that have a dress requirement of dresses and tuxedos. Visions of aloof, almost militant conductors with long tails on their suits also come to mind. However, after attending the Louisville Orchestra’s pops season event “The Music of Led Zeppelin”, it became very obvious that even the prestigious Louisville Orchestra and their devoted following could let their hair down and rock and roll for one evening.…

It was Monday, November 17 cold and snowy outside Ophelia Paris Concert Hall, Truman State University but inside it was all warmth and light as Elaine AuBuchon started the Double Reed Recital. Having not been to any actual classical music concert, I was excited to hear the talent that we have in our campus. I took it upon myself to go with an open mind, without having any previous predispositions that would affect my reaction to the concert. I just wanted to go in there, not knowing anything about the concert, and see what I hear in the music. This concert was open to anyone and free admission. The program presented a variety of styles…

The Black Violin concerts are a fusion of jazz, classical, blues, hip-hop, and R&B portrayed by virtuoso violinists Wil Baptiste, who prefers to be recognized as “Wil B”, and partner in the Black Violin duet, Kevin Sylvester, who also prefers to be known as “Kev Marcus”. Will B and Kev Marcus made a trip down to Lubbock, Texas to preform live in the Allen Theatre on the Texas Tech Campus on February twelfth at seven o’clock pm. The audience consisted of a very extensive variety of people. Whites, blacks, hispanics, older, younger, and most of which that were students. The audience was overly enjoyed to be in the presence of two outstanding performers that continue to master the meaning of a five-star rated act. The show on February sixteenth…

To emphasise McQueen’s point about the racism, he used the idea of recurring motifs to further illustrate his point. The recurring motif of the violin symbolises Solomon’s passion and hobby, and of what he should be doing with his life. In the film, there is a mid-shot of posh men and women dancing to the music created by the violin that Solomon is playing, to symbolise the happiness and joy in the Northern state of America, where equality is present as blacks and whites lived in harmony and with equal opportunities. Retrospectively, in the past, the Northern parts of United States had a slave-free environment where all are treated equally during the 1840s. The pure talent that Solomon possess is regarded as being very fine, proved by the dialogue, “These two gentlemen were enquiring…
