Introduction
Throughout the Health and Social Care profession there are a number of different factors that help influence communication and interpersonal interactions. Throughout this essay, I will describe what the different factors are and how and why they influence communication and interpersonal interactions. I will also talk about what strategies there are that can help a person overcome the different barriers to communication. Lastly I will end the essay by reviewing and evaluating strategies that are used in health and social which help to overcome barriers to communication and interpersonal interactions. P3 – Explain factors that may influence communication and interpersonal interactions in health and social care environments. P4 – Explain strategies used to overcome barriers to communication and interpersonal interactions. Throughout health and social care there are a number of different factors that will all influence the communication and interpersonal skills between two or more people. The types of barriers that will influence communication and interpersonal interactions are things like, Alcohol and drugs, jargon, cultural variations, disabilities and language preferences. Alcohol/Drugs

Alcohol and Drugs are a type of barrier that may influence communication and interpersonal interactions, this is because when there is an individual who is under the influence of alcohol and drugs this will affect their communication because when they are under the influence, their communication and interpersonal interaction will become limited as some people tend to withdraw themselves from the group and will not communicate with others, some may become verbally or physically abusive and it may also cause people to become more approachable so that other people will talk to them because they are not as shy as before. The strategies that could help a service user or individual to overcome this barrier would be to use listening skills, patience and for the individual to have a good knowledge of the ‘communication cycle’. This is because if the individual has good listening skills then the other person who they are communicating with will then feel as though they are being listened to which will make them feel empowered and more engaged in the conversation. If they are a very patient person, then this will also empower the person who is communicating with the receiver as they will feel as though the person who they are talking to is not in a rush to get to another place, and also it will make them feel as though they have someone who will listen to them without paying attention. Also if they have a good amount of knowledge then this will mean that they will understand what the different stages are of the communication cycle, and how the person is communicating with them, which will also help them to understand why the person is communicating that information across. Disabilities

Disabilities are a type of barrier that may influence communication and interpersonal interactions as a person who has a disability (depending on what the disability is) will mean that it may affect the way that they are able to communicate to other people and what their interpersonal interactions are like. Having a disability is a barrier because it can cause people to not be able to communicate the information that maybe they would like to communicate across to another person, for example, if a person has a disability where perhaps they are unable to speak and may be mute, then this will affect the way that they communicate to other people as they may have to communicate via sign language or braille. The strategies that could help a service user or individual to overcome this barrier would be different depending on whether the individual or service user had a visual, hearing or physical disability. If the service user had a visual disability then ways that would be used to help them overcome this barrier would be to use things like braille,...
