Abstract

This assignment is to discuss of the topics covered in computing and information technology in the workplace and how it has been implemented in DHL’s day-to-day processes.

This report shows how technology being used within DHL has helped it to grow tremendously in the past few decades. Information technology is clearly visible in most of the processes DHL carries out from order taking till the point of delivery. Whether they are online applications complimenting various devices or simple mail updating, this report shows the major technological elements used in DHL’s main processes. This report explains the advantages and disadvantages of information technology, impact of information technology and application of the three chosen topics covered in the module. It also shows the similarities and differences of the chosen topics and recommendations for a problem existing due to information technology and proposals for the betterment of the company.

1.0 Introduction

DHL is a leading global brand, currently the world’s largest courier company and a dominating logistics group.

Three people named Adrian Dalsey, Larry Hollblom and Robert Lynn founded DHL in 1969. ‘DHL’ makes up of the last names of the 3 founders. Having started off as pioneers of door-to-door express delivery in the United States of America; DHL grew tremendously in just a few decades. They invented the international ‘air express industry’. Just over a span of twelve months, DHL was handling shipments for over forty clients and expanding rapidly. DHL’s exceptional establishment of their network of industrious customers in the USA supported them to meet demands internationally. In 1998, Deutsche took over DHL international. Over the years, DHL has been future oriented introducing several revolutionary technological methods in their service mechanism.

DHL offers facultative services like logistics that mainly consists of freight transportation, warehousing and distribution. Security & insurance, supply chain solutions, industry sector solutions and customer resource area are also offered to facilitate customers who use DHL’s logistic services.
