Computer Science / Technology as a field is not very diverse in terms of people and opinions
Computer Science has an ever increasing impact on people’s lives. It has helped to make life much more simpler than before. It is a field for everyone but sadly not everyone is contributing to it. Computer Science/Technology is mainly a male-dominated industry and that too by people of specific caste, religion, nation ,gender. Diversity cannot be only identified by caste, religion. Diversity calls for diversity beyond just gender, race, or physical and intellectual abilities to include diversity in opinions, sexual preferences, social customs and mores, and other aspects of the variations in lives and lifestyles. In India, various groups like women, students with disabilities, tribes, scheduled castes and other backward classes remains historically underrepresented in this field. IIT’s (the most pioneering engineering institutes) have female to male ratio of 1:10.Similar is the case for most of the engineering institutes in India. Why? Why are all these groups underrepresented in CS field? Groups such as tribes, schedule castes remain very backward. If you have never experienced technology and technology does not influence your lifestyle in any way shape, form then it is very unlikely that you will be contributing towards it. Most women do not prefer engineering as they are mostly attracted to areas in which they feel they are making a difference to the human society and to them computer is not making any difference to the lives of poor and sick people. The courage to fight against their disabilities and work for technology and thinking of people that they will never come in par with ordinary people is the main factor of restriction for students with disabilities.
