Complicated Relationships In Italian Opera
Complicated relationships seem to be a recurring theme throughout Italian Opera. In the movie version of the opera Cavalleria Rusticana by Pietro Mascagni, this seems to ring true. This opera is an example of realism, also known as verismo. This film version of the opera is focused on love and jealousy filled with symbolic music and a great libretto. The story revolves around Santuzza, Turiddu, Alfio, Lola, and Mamma Lucia. Yelena Obraztsova as Santuzza, in a soprano voice, is a peasant girl from the village. Plácido Domingo as Turiddu, in a tenor voice, is a young solider. Renato Bruson as Alfio, in a baritone, is a rich wine shipper. Axelle Gall as Lola, as a mezzo-soprano, is Alfio’s wife. Fedora Barbieri as Mamma Lucia, in a contralto voice, …show more content…
As his vengeance, Turiddu decides to pursue a woman named Santuzza. A good comparison is as how Andrea from D’Annunzio’s novel Pleasure pursues Maria when he sees his first lover Elena married to another man. Lola hears about the relationship and becomes jealous as soon as she finds out. After Lola finds out, the affair between Turiddu and Lola begins. After Santuzza sleeps with Turiddu, she can sense that he has been with another woman, much like Maria can feel that Andrea and Elena had known each other romantically before she began spending time with …show more content…
Lucia has pity for Santuzza, the church excommunicated her for her relationship with Turiddu. Santuzza asks Lucia to pray for her because she can’t enter the church. Turiddu returns home and Santuzza confronts his actions. He brushes Santuzza off and goes to church, following Lola inside. In a place of anger, Santuzza finds Alfio and tells him about Turiddu and Lola’s infidelity.
After Easter mass, Turiddu leaves with Lola and offers drinks to the whole town. Alfio enters the scene and Turiddu offers him a drink. Alfio instead challenges Turiddu to fight. Turiddu agrees and goes to say goodbye to his mother and kiss her just incase he doesn’t return. At the end, cries are heard and it is announced that Turiddu has been killed. All the women of the village group up and are full of despair. Of course, all the women except Lola.
The film is different from the short story in the sense that it cut a few of the details out, but it was short, sweet, and to the point. All the information needed could be seen. Also, in the film, unlike the novel, the character of Lola has a light shined on her more. She doesn’t appear very much in the story, but in the film it is felt how she has no remorse over what she’s

One of the most significant differences between the short story and the movie is the developing of Charlie's character in the story. In the book for example, is nothing said about his family, whereas in the movie is told a lot about his childhood and in the end he also sees his mother. When we see Charlie in the movie identifying himself as lonely, he becomes a more described character than he is in the book. This shows the difference that in a short story we have to develop a character ourselves, but in a movie only throughout one picture of a person we already get a description of this character we would never have got in a short story. In the movie we have seen the information about Charlie we immediately get it supported by information about his family.…

First of all, it is evident that the very detailed description cannot translate to cinematic form. To replicate this, the suspense is portrayed through the faces of the young actors who are, in my view, simply not talented enough to be able to properly bring out our emotions with the poorly performed dialog.…

Father Jerome comes to the apartment to talk to Manfred and Hipplita about Isabella; he wants to ask Hippolia whether she knows the cause of Isabella's retirement to the monastery. Before she can answer, however, Manfred interrupts the father, eagerly trying to avoid his telling Hipplita of the circumstances. Father Jerome nevertheless gives an account of Isabella's story and askes that they leave her at peace. Once again, he begins to hint at details concerning Isabella, but Manfred again interrupts him and Hippolita, realizing that Manfred does not want her to hear the father's words, leaves. Manfred then tries to convince Father Jerome that he must have an heir and then asks the priest to persuade Isabella to marry him. To get Father Jerome on his side, Manfred even hints at an unlawful marriage between Hippolita and himself, telling the father that Hippolita is actually related to him in the fourth degree. Father Jeome is now unsure what to do and tries to win time. Manfred then asks Jerome who the youth is, whether he is Isabella's lover and Jerome, thinking that this might help Isabella, affirms Manfred's assumption. At this, Manfred becomes furious. He ordered the peasant to be brought before him and begins to interrogate him about his connection with Isabella. During this interrogation, Matilda and Bianca are on their way toHippolita's apartment. They overdear the men's…
