Title : Competency of Intermediate Teachers in Science and Health

The study determined the competency in Science and Health of intermediate teachers from Lingayen District I. It looked for: 1) The profile of the Science and Health teachers in Lingayen District I in terms of age, sex, civil status, highest educational attainment, position/rank, membership to Science and Health organization, no. of years in service as teacher in Science and Health, no. of Science and Health-related seminars and trainings attended, no. of Science and Health-related competitions participated, and awards received as a science and health teacher; 2) Level of competency of the Science and Health teachers assessed by the school head and the teachers along subject matter preparation, planning and designing learning experiences, creating and maintaining effective environment for pupil learning, support to pupils’ learning, and assessment of pupils’ learning; 3) Level of effectiveness of the Science teachers as perceived by the school heads and the teachers themselves in terms of subject matter preparation, planning and designing learning experiences, creating and maintaining effective environment for pupil learning, support to pupils’ learning, and assessment of pupils’ learning; 4) Significant difference on the level of competency and level of effectiveness of Science and Health teachers across their profile variables; 5) Significant relationship between the level of competency of Science and Health teachers and the level of effectiveness of the Science and Health teachers; and, 6) Significant relationship between the teachers’ level of competency of across their profile variables. Results of the study showed that intermediate teachers from the Lingayen District I are mostly within 36 to 50 years of age, female, married, has master’s degree units, and with position as Teacher III. Moreover, majority are members of two science organizations, rendering services as science teacher for 5 to 10 years, have 0 to 5 trainings/seminars related to science and health, have joined less than 5 science and health competitions and have received not more than 5 awards as Science and health teacher; The level of competence of teachers in teaching science and health is highly competent in all areas but need to improve approach in organizing curriculum to support student understanding of subject matter, designing and writing short-term / long-term plans to foster pupil learning, engaging pupils in problem-solving, critical thinking and other activities that make the subject matter meaningful, using English language to communicate Science and Health topics and modifying teaching plans to adjust for pupils’ needs; The level of effectiveness of teachers in teaching science and health is highly effective in all areas but need to develop strategies to improve effectiveness in organizing curriculum to support student understanding of subject matter, designing and writing short-term / long-term plans to foster pupil learning, engaging pupils in problem-solving, critical thinking and other activities that make the subject matter meaningful, using English language to communicate Science and Health topics, and modifying teaching plans to adjust for pupils’ needs; There is significant difference on the level of competency and level of effectiveness of Science and Health teachers across position/rank of the intermediate teachers. Higher ranks/positions (Teacher III and Master Teacher) rated higher than lower ranks/positions (Teacher I and Teacher II); There is significant relationship between the level of competency of Science and Health teachers and the level of effectiveness of the Science and Health teachers; and, There is significant relationship between the teachers’ level of competency across position/rank of the teachers. This is the only profile variable which is considered as positive indicator that influenced the perceived level of competency and level of effectiveness of the intermediate science and health teachers. The intermediate teachers have higher regard in themselves in terms of their competency and effectiveness in teaching science and health than their school heads.
