To Advance Physical and Intellectual Competence

To advance physical and intellectual competence, it is import to provide children with age appropriate activities. There are benefits for fine motor skill development along with supporting physical advancement. An example of one activity would be to encourage a non mobile child to reach and grasp certain toys and or rattles. I would do this by placing the child in an activity saucer and showing them the different way to touch or move the activities surrounding them. Mobile infants could have an activity that promotes standing, such as working at a water table. The table would have to be low enough for the child to balance while standing. To promote physical development in toddler’s, activities like an obstacle course or a riding toy would help strengthen muscles. A child would be encouraged to use both their hands and their feet to develop more defined fine motor skills. To support cognitive advancement, it is necessary to provide various activities that will promote problem solving and exploration. A game of peek-a-boo can improve an infants cognitive skills by showing them cause and effect and also demonstrating that an object still exist even when not in sight. An activity to promote cognitive growth in an older infant would be to let them play with pretend food at a cooking station. An example of creating cognitive development in toddlers is by showing toddlers a color and then encouraging them to find that color in the classroom and school building. It is important to promote both verbal and non verbal communication for children in a classroom depending on age. Communication in young infants can be promoted by placing toys in front of them that make sounds. The infant can recreate the sound or also coo as a reaction to the noise.     The first one is Physical which obviously consists of the child’s physiology. So muscle development would be improved through play and this can include gross motor skills as a whole. According to Fisher (2007), running, jumping, climbing skipping, swimming and the use of large equipment e.g. tricycles and other climbing frames and so on, can all help strengthen their leg muscles, arm muscles and others. However, to prevent a child from getting hurt, precautions need to be put in place and remain there at all times, such as impact- absorbent surfaces. Children need to explore the world and they may not have perfect balance yet and therefore, these provisions need to be in place. As the child gets older, games that require more physical energy and agility such as riding bicycles, skipping and games e.g. football, hockey and so on will be more appropriate as to begin with, a child needs to gradually develop their physical abilities, from a very young age, this will mainly include fine motor skills and developing the ability to pick up small objects and place them somewhere else however as the child begins to take their first steps then they will require toys that aid their movement such as walkers that have interactive buttons to encourage play. Further development will include running, jumping and more energetic movements that only bigger team games and larger play equipment will meet the needs of. Therefore the child’s gross and fine motor skills are all met meaning the child develops all areas of their physical requirements. Balance and coordination will also be improved from games that involve movement as well as an awareness of speed, distance and size when playing throw and catch games or catch games, they’ll learn to determine the distance and speed at which the ball is moving; this can be considered intellectual development.     To advance physical and intellectual competence I provide various amounts of equipment and activities that help promote the physical development of children I do this by offering activities that will allow children to use their small muscles and large muscles. Children need these types of activities so they can become familiar about how to use their muscles and to develop body strength. Activities such as jumping, running, and balancing themselves will help them gain strength in lower parts of their bodies. These activities allow them to work with their gross motor skills. Activities such as painting, puzzles, writing, coloring allows them to use their fine motor skills. I try to encourage children to use their cognitive skills. I do this by having the children think about how to solve problems rather than simply asking question and receiving and answer. For example children asked “What happens if we bring a grasshopper into the classroom?” The children brought a grasshopper into classroom to see if it would hop around, make noise, move, or stay still. Then the children and I discussed why it moved or didn’t move. I keep activities interesting so that the children will want to learn and use their minds. In the classroom cognitive skills are used on a daily basis. I encourage children to be creative. To me children should have access to materials such as markers, crayons, paint, and pencils, and paper. By having these materials available will allow them to explore and be creative.     In order to optimize the child’s physical development during early childhood, parents should provide the child with numerous opportunities to be active. The parent should monitor the amount of time that the child spends watching TV shows or movies or playing games on the parent’s phone. Rather than sending a bored child to watch a movie the parent could take the child outside and play soccer or basketball. Not only would this enhance the child’s gross motor skills (which involve large muscle groups) but it would provide the child with exercise as well. Preschool children should engage in at least two hours of physical activity per day, divided into one hour of unstructured free play and one hour of structured activity. For a structured activity caregivers could do a puzzle with the child or put together a Lego theme set. By the end of early childhood the child’s fine motor skills have most likely improved to the point where the child could write their own name, build objects with blocks, and pour from a pitcher without spilling.
