With the financial data presented in this case, compute the ratios of the strategics profit model for Walmart and Target stores. Interpret these ratios with the special attention to comparing these two major discount retailer.

I thought that Walmart is significantly higher than Target. Walmart is increasing at the steady rate, whereas Target changes a lot. Target eventually gets to a point where its still increasing but its not increasing at the same rate that Walmart is. At the end of third quarter of Walmart had nearly $210 billion in assets. On average the company sells $1.3 billion a day. While Target has just entered the Canadian market --and Big lots is pulling out of it. Walmart has operation in US, Brazil, Argentina, Canada, Central

A review of core operating data shows that annual sales improved by 399 million and 98.2 million for Wal-Mart and Target, respectively. This resulted in Wal-Mart improving net income by 36.1%, and Target producing a 21.8% gain over the previous year. While Wal-Mart would appear to have improved dramatically, further review reveals that this improvement is due to a large reduction in income taxes, caused by a corresponding loss in business segment walmart.com. Because this segment is expected to reduce its losses in 2003, look for Wal-Mart to have a more modest improvement in net income.…

I chose one of Walmart's biggest competitors. Target uses the LIFO method. The LIFO method has its advantages and disadvantages just like the FIFO method. So as prices rise the cost of purchasing merchandise goes up, since they are using the LIFO method those cost are recouped faster. Next all business need to keep track of their revenues and cost so it can continue to thrive, so I feel using the LIFO would be better for the business to keep track of that information. Lastly the LIFO method keeps a business reporting taxes as low as they can possible be. Now some of the disadvantages of the LIFO method, so we mentioned rising prices but if the cost of purchasing merchandise drops using this method would have an opposite effect and would take…

I decided to research the competing stores of Walmart and Target. Sam Walton opened his first store in Arkansas in 1962. His visions included helping customers and communities save money and live better. Walmart was considered the nation’s top retailer by the 90’s and enjoyed its first $100 billion sales year by 1997. In the New Millennium, “Walmart made a major commitment to environmental sustainability, announcing goals to create zero waste, use only renewable energy and sell products that sustain people and the environment. (www.walmart.com)” “ In 2010, Walmart launched a global commitment to sustainable agriculture, aiming to strengthen local farmers and economies, while providing customers access to affordable, high-quality food. (www.walmart.com)” Walmart celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2012 and currently employs over 2.2 million associates worldwide and serves 200 million customers each week at more than 10,000 stores in 27 countries. According to the Walmart website, their core beliefs are service to our customers, respect for the individual, and strive for excellence and to act with integrity. After some research, it appears that the organizational culture of Walmart is still subject to an authoritarian culture. Authoritarian means favoring complete obedience or subjection to authority as opposed to individual freedom. The culture is viewed this way after multiple lawsuits against Walmart from their employees regarding wages, work hours, and advancement opportunities. There are many female employees of Walmart that would like to be eligible for promotions to management, however Walmart has made it difficult for women to take those positions. They have created the management structure in a way that most women are simply unable to accept. They do this by making relocation a fixed policy for management positions.…

Today’s economy and the increased unemployment rate have made the average American household drastically change their spending habits. The average household has to function on surviving with less. Which brings me to my topic. We have become a savvier shopper; ultimately looking for the establishment can offer the most for our money with out sacrificing quality. We have become “bargain shoppers”. When I think of a discount store two major companies come to mind Target and Wal-Mart. The merchandise and services provided are pretty much comparable. Many of its customer population shops there for two simply reasons one is out of loyalty and the other being it’s a preference.…

For my research, I chose to compare Nordstrom and Walmart since they seem to be catering to different spectrums of class dynamic. I decide to do my research over the weekend where majority of individuals have days off work. I also did not want my choice of clothing to affect the outcome of my observation and interactions among those in the store. Therefore, I wore a dressy blouse with black pants to fit the model of their clientele in Norstrom and comfortable clothes such as; a red tee shirt and blue jeans when I visited Walmart. With this said, at first I was not sure about what product I wanted to focus on until I got to Nordstrom located at the Arden Fair Mall in Sacramento. It was approximately 4:40 when I arrived and as I walked into the store I notices to my left a beautifully structured and organized shoe section. That is when I decided to focus my research on shoes, but specifically high heels.…
