Comparison of Three Sculptures

The three David statues are perfect examples of how art is heavily influenced by the culture and time in which it was produced. The three versions show that a person or object can be shown in different ways and the differences are a direct reflection of the artist’s culture and popular styles of his era. One of the main characteristics of the Renaissance was a return to Classical forms, or artistic styles of ancient Rome and Greece. Donatello reintroduced several of these abandoned Classical themes with his David. His bronze sculpture of David features a slender, nude youth standing on the head of the defeated giant. Rather than holding the sling, David is holding a sword, having just beheaded Goliath after the battle. The male nude had not been used for centuries, being deemed heretical by the Church. Also his David is resting all his weight on one leg, giving a slight angle to his hips, tis is known as contrapposto, and this realistic stance was a hallmark of Classical sculpture. Michelangelo’s David was sculpted in the renaissance style which idealizes the human form. In this style the adult male is often depicted in his prime and very athletically portrayed. In this version of David the man is depicted as thoughtful in contrast to a more action implied stance favored by other styles of sculpture. This was very typical of the renaissance style as well as this was the age of thought and reason. David appears to be contemplating the upcoming altercation with Goliath. The third Bernini's David is like a major league pitcher winding up to throw a 95 miles an hour fastball. His statue features Baroque art, which wants the viewer to be able to relate to the image of their bodies, not just their minds. Bernini's David uses the space around it reaching out into the space of the viewer. Bernini's David is not content, the way Michelangelo's David is—to remain separate from us. When looking at Bernini's David, we immediately start to feel what David is feeling. This sympathy is very important to Baroque art.
