Gangs are coastally occurring in life they have no discrimination on race or gender causing any one to turn to the path of gang. Many gangs are usually created based on specific race making it easier for people to feel secure when it comes to join them. However as it is stated, “the 18th Street gang was the first Hispanic gang to break the racial membership barrier. Membership was originally open to Latinos. Although most members tend to be of Latino descent, membership has opened to other backgrounds, including Central American, African American, Middle Eastern, Asian, Caucasian, and Native American.” This causes the growth of the 18th street gang to grow and expand larger into the city of Los Angeles.…

Into days gangs many gang members have renegade and follow no law or structure of the code that was laid down. gangs in the early 1970's we more goal and family orientated and protecting one another trying to limit the violence and were more about the almighty dollar before anything. The gangs that did not join People or Folks in the late 70s basically went through hell on the streets; they were surrounded on all sides by gangs that would team up to destroy them. Since Folk and People nation gangs consisted of mostly the biggest gangs in the city, gangs that were not Folk or People were being crushed by both sides in certain neighborhoods. starting early gang violence has been calming the lives of innocent people in cross fire and territory wars. it's sad to say that this is the way of life that the city of Chicago has learned to adapted to and live the life of barbarian human beings claiming the lives of hundreds of innocent people every year.…
Two words may have similar denotations, but over time events and trends change the meaning of these words. Words such as “gang” and “club” have evolved, and since evolving one has arose as a positive word and the other a negative. These changes in connotations develop when an event becomes significant enough to be a part of the media and become ingrained in history. Then from then on these words cannot ever go back to meaning anything different because of a popular following and spreading.…
Street gangs have been a part of American history for years. According a report from the Immigration Customs Enforcement, MS-13 is the most violent and rapidly spreading gang in the United States. Their major areas of concentration are in 33 states which not limited to: California, Texas, New York, Maryland, and Nebraska to name a few. The origin of the MS-13 can be traced to Los Angeles in the 1980s. Salvadoran families have fled to L.A. to escape from the civil war that was happening in El Salvador. They were already skilled in the use of weapons and combat that came from their environment of war and violence. As a minority group, they were discriminated against within their own society. They banded together for support and protection from…
After investigating adolescents’ gang involvement, I come to recognize that adolescents’ gang involvement has become a major societal concern. Adolescent affiliation with gangs and delinquent behavior numbers has soared as of recently and may continue to due to numerous societal issues. In the article “The Origins of Black Crime,” author, William Cross, agrees when he states, “black delinquency rate steadily increased between 1920 till 1940, with greater crime involvement in the more run-down sections of the black community, where broken black families resided” (Cross, 2003, pg 7). Societal issues that range from poverty, lack of proper education and poor schools, unbalanced family structures, abuse, neglect,…
There have been many theoretical explanations of why delinquents and adolescence, youth and other people might join gangs. There are many different socioeconomic factors in their decision or choice to join a street gang. There have also been many different types of experts, researchers, doctors, sociologists, and psychologists all have their own theories and opinions about the socioeconomic factors…
By doing this gangs are creating resistance identities. The resistance strategies that they are implementing may try to fulfill economic or political needs and may develop a distinctive identity through specific characteristics, symbols and rituals. Understanding the characteristics of gangs is significant in order to truly understand gangs. The depth and complexity of their alienation can only be completely understood by understanding their subculture identity. Understanding gangs means understanding them as social actors. This is critical in being able to create the proper policies and social movements (Hagedorn, 2005). Without a proper understanding of gangs the reduction of violence and inequalities will not be…
Unlike other societal trauma, such as domestic violence or human trafficking, with gang violence it is a little bit more difficult to distinguish a singular perpetrator. Typically, there is an established hierarchy between victim and perpetrator. Perpetrators assert a sense of superiority over their victims. In regards to gang violence, those engaging in violent acts are almost identical in socioeconomic and cultural factors to their victims. The true difference between victim and perpetrator is matter of choice. Like their victims, perpetrators face poverty, lack of opportunity, and oppression. However, perpetrators choose to accomplish their goals and attempt to regain control over their situation by instilling fear in community members.…
For example the notorious Bloods gangs in America are involved in large scale distribution of crack/cocaine and also participate in gang warfare against the Crips who are another notorious American street gang. Another purpose of gangs is to have different people who have either been ignored in their family or by society to come together and form a social group in which they feel wanted and receive support. In a way a gang acts as a family to many of its gang members. All gangs have a common purpose, whether it is participating in illegal activity or acting as a…
The presence of these groups are dated back to the nation’s start and arrived in multiple phases. Research suggests that the history of street gangs in the United States began on the East Coast around 1783, at the heels of the American Revolution. In regards to the magnitude of organized crime today, these gangs were not very serious and mostly consisted of youth fighting over turf in their new country. From the start of the twentieth century, gang presence became a different entity. The “Roaring Twenties” saw Prohibition, a national ban on the sale, manufacture, and transportation of alcohol. The law was finally repealed in 1933 with the ratification of the 21st Amendment, but the time it was in effect saw the flourish of a profitable and violent black market for alcohol. Prohibition had given organized crime a huge boost as opposed to reducing misconduct. The next period of the twentieth century was quite a tumultuous time; the segregation and generally unequal treatment of minorities bred resentment and a need to band together in defense of their respective neighborhoods. The next era of America’s gang evolution was that of crack-cocaine in the 1980s. The introduction of this powerful and highly addictive drug created a lucrative new market in the impoverished areas of major cities. The money earned from selling drugs was being used to purchase weapons to protect each gang’s own “banging” territory, where only…
