Comparison Essay on Different Seasons

Essay #4 Comparison
The Different Seasons
As a new season approaches we all get excited and ready for a new change. Winter and summer are two very different seasons but also have similar characteristics. When winter comes around, everyone gets out their scarfs, boots, and warm clothes to get ready for the cold. In the winter, we get excited for snow and of course Christmas. Everyone enjoys Christmas and celebrating the holidays with family and friends. It’s almost like everyone hibernates in their homes because no one wants to go out in the cold or drive anywhere. It also gets dark very early so there’s not much time to be outside. Instead we might sit inside, cuddled up in a blanket, trying to get warm and watch a movie. I find myself not going out as much in the winter time and I can get very bored sitting in my house all night. If we get snow, it’s always fun to play outside in the snow or go snowmobiling. That’s if you don’t mind freezing and most likely going inside after an hour because you’re so cold. When I think of winter, I think of that feeling where you are so cold that you can barely feel your hands and your ears feel like they’re going to fall off. I think of hot chocolate and Christmas cookies. The worst part about winter would be shoveling the snow that builds up in your driveway and being cold. The best part is the holiday spirit that takes place for Christmas and New Year’s. When winter is finally over and it starts to get nice out again, everybody gets excited for summer where you have no school and you can stay out all night making memories with your friends. Usually summer is also very exciting because lots of families go on vacations in the summer which is always something people look forward too. Everyone loves the nice weather where you can sit outside all day and enjoy the sun. I feel as if people can never get bored in the summer because there’s always something to do whether it’s tanning, swimming, tubing, fishing, or just being outside all day because it’s so nice out. Also, picnics, Fourth of July, and barbecues are the great things about summer. When I think of summer, I think of being tan and wearing flip-flops and shorts. I think of people having fun and living their life. The worst thing about summer is the days when it gets so hot that you feel like you can’t do anything but sit inside and stay in the air conditioning. The best part is the nice weather and the freedom to do fun things because school is out and you can enjoy the summer off. As you can see, people can enjoy the different seasons because both winter and summer have good characteristics about them. They are similar because they both have holidays that are celebrated and outdoor activities that take place. I prefer summer over winter. I would rather it be hot then cold because I love being outside all the time keeping busy. In the winter, I get bored and find myself to become lazy because it’s so cold out that I don’t feel like doing anything. I love tanning in the summer and absolutely hate being so pale in the winter. I would rather wear flip-flops and shorts then winter jackets and boots every day. I love summer because it’s a time where I always make new memories that I will always remember. Summer is also my favorite season because my birthday is in the summer which is something I always look forward to. My day in the summer would consist of no school, hanging with friends, swimming, tanning, and enjoying the nice weather where in the winter my day would be less fun and much more boring. Both seasons have nice things about them but summer would be the season that I enjoy the most and like better.

I hated winter, the days were short and the nights were long. The howl of the wind in my ears as it blew hair into my face, making it difficult to concentrate on the environment around me. I could feel the cold nipping at my skin, the air turning cloudy in front of me as if I was breathing out smoke. This was winter.…

Chapter twenty of How to Read Literature Like a Professor is utilized to display the importance of season in literature. Foster explains how different authors have used it to suit different needs but in the Wolves of Mercy Falls trilogy by Maggie Stiefvater, the importance of season is so blatant that it’s impossible to miss. The premise of the trilogy is that the werewolves that exist within it are unable to become human once again until it is warm enough. But each year, they require the temperature to be higher and higher to be able to change. Eventually, it doesn’t ever become warm enough again, and they are stuck as a wolf forever. The seasons represent a more general term of temperature, and as a way for the wolves to measure both the…

The Roman Empire and China developed into two of the major civilizations of the classical era. Though located on separate continents, they shared many characteristics, including the reasons for their collapse. Disease, internal, and external conflicts caused the declines both empires with the moving of Rome’s capital also being a factor in its fall; however the outcomes of their falls were different since China remained unified because of Confucianism.…

Summer to me is the season of fun; the season where kids get to be outside play all day long because the day is illuminated by the sun almost until eight at night. I got to play all day and it was even better when my cousins came over, I especially enjoyed this season when I was little. I have four other cousins that are about my age so you can imagine how chaotic it was with six kids from ages six to ten years old being together. As all kids we looked for adventure with our imagination, we invented games, and our parents taught us games they played when they were younger. One game that especially stood out was a game called “hoyitos” or “little holes”.…

The holidays are fast approaching and I can't believe it. The leaves have changed colors and are falling rapidly off the trees. It seems like I looked and blinked and an entire year just just flew by, and my now little girl is not so little anymore. I've been going through photos of past Christmases and I can see the growth that has taken place throughout the year. As most of you know, I grew up in the Caribbean and I never experienced snow until we moved to the United States. Christmas for us meant cotton dresses and tees and we were even able to wear shorts as well, because it was summer all year round. Now fast forward to today, and I have children of my own and they need different wardrobes for each season including the holidays. The…

Typically when I’m given an article to read I’m not too thrilled. Unless it applies to fashion or cupcakes it is safe to say that I fall into the “I have better things to do” camp along with many of my peers. This mentality, as much as it gets the best of me, seems to dissolve the night before the article is due. After I have exhausted every other option, like organizing my closet to pure perfection, I take the article out of my backpack and give it a once over. Then I underline some phrases and highlight a few quotes while my iPod blasts John Mayer. About 15 minutes later, feeling utterly satisfied and proud for subjecting myself to such torture, I return the article to its folder and call it a night. The next day however, during the inevitable discussion that follows, I find myself lost and tongue-tied. My ideas over the article and its meaning are unclear, proving my process pointless. I listen to my classmates discuss opinions and vocabulary words and take notes off of their comments. By the end of the hour I have a better overall view of the article, but no personal prospective.…

Starting from a place I remembered as a teen, moving from a place that was warm to a place that had all four seasons; such as winter, spring, summer and fall. The First place that I grew up was surrounded by mountains. During the winter it was full of white snow, something that I was never used to seeing coming from California where all one would see was sandy beaches and the waves clasping one another. As I remember being so new to Park City, UT all I could see was the wonderful views of trees, mountains and people skiing or snowboarding. I have to say this was a fond memory because for the firs time I was actually able to experience the feeling of what winter was…

The winter imagery poem I chose that I felt captures the essence of Canadian winters is called “An Ontario Poem”. This poem provides expressive words and vivid examples to provide the reality of Canadian winters. The first couple of stanzas explains just how vigorously the wind blows also showing the reality of just how cold it really gets. It portrays this by stating “...and the gentle breezes blow at seventy-five miles an hour at thirty-five below”. The following four lines discuss how we love the weather although in some situations it ends up being excessive. It gets to the point where, snow falls to where it is touching our backside, or also taking a whiff of the cold air “and your nostrils freeze shut”. Thus meaning the winter air is…

No other season has the holiday spirit that is present in the winter. The winter has multiple holidays that everyone looks forward to, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Valentines Day, New Years Eve/Day, and the best of all Christmas. The smell of the ginger bread cookies that the mothers make is the traditional Christmas holiday scent. While the mothers are cooking the older sons are hanging the Christmas lights with their fathers. The mothers and daughters decorating the house and Christmas tree while the younger kids are writing up their Christmas wish lists to send to the North Pole. The little girls go out side to build some snowmen while the boys go play some shinny with their friends on the frozen pond. Whereas in the summer there is no pond hockey, no presents, and no holiday spirit. Only unpleasant things await ones presence in the summer. As the summer season comes around, it won’t wont have any presents, ginger bread cookies, frozen pond hockey, or a nice cool night of sleep waiting for you.…
