Comparing Two Different Texts Advice In Jamaica Kincaid's Girl
If by Rudyard Kipling, and Girl by Jamaica Kincaid, are two texts about parents giving their kids advice about the real world. In Girl a mom is writing to her daughter about specific rules she needs to follow in the real world to become a successful women. In If a father is telling his son about basic rules he can follow. The Two texts might sound the same, but they are also different.

In both texts “If” and “Girl” they both have a similar topic that is they are both getting advice from their parents. I know this because in the text of Girls it says “Girl is where a mother writes to her daughter.” So from this we can say that the mother in “Girl” is giving her a list of specific rules to follow in order to become successful in the real world. Then in the text of “If” it says “If you are losing theirs and blaming it on you.” This shows that the father is giving his son a rule, but it's a basic rule, not as specific as the mother’s rule in the poem “Girl”

Next is, The two texts are also different in a way. Evidence of this is “The mother in “Girl expects a great deal of her daughter, and she does not hesitate to let the girl know.” From this evidence we can say that the mother throws out rules of things she can and can’t do, but what if the girl wants to be someone different than what her mother wants her to be. Some evidence from “If” is

Evidence of the theme of “Girl” is “The mother in “Girl” expects a great deal of her daughter, and she does not hesitate to let the girl know.” So this shows that the mother wants the girl to become somebody the mother wants her to be, not what the girl wants to be. Evidence from the theme of “If” is “Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it, And--which is more--you'll be a Man, my son!” This shows that the father is more supporting than the mother in

The effect of including similarities between Rosie’s parents is to inform the readers there are more differences than similarities and the similarities which are more physical are less important in regards to what strengthens a relationship. Furthermore, this helps identify a better picture of her parent’s influence on Rosy and the rest of her family. If Rosy had only included differences, it would not be clear to a reader that there are similarities and what they may be.…

The theme of family/relationship can be seen in the poems Theatre and Even If You Weren’t My Father. This theme explores the idea of how a family relationship can be positive of negative. Both these poems express the theme in a different way, Theatre for example is very cold and depressing for a family relationship. The poem ends with a strong, short line of “a stranger” to provide emphasis on the poem. This line can be interpreted in two ways: That he is s stranger to her, or that she feels like the stranger herself. The final line basically summarises the entire poem, it also sums up her whole relationship with her child, how distant she was, how clueless she was about the whole situation, about being a mother. The reader can almost feel a sense of sadness at the line, regret even and that after years of being apart she has finally realised that she didn’t achieve any kind of real relationship, a bond with her child and that she’s using this poem as a means to reach out and reconnect with her child one last time. Even If You Weren’t My Father is a much warmer relationship; they were close as a family. The final line “I would above all other men so love you.” strongly emphasis his loving emotion for his father, it highlights there whole relationship in a positive light. It conveys a much more personal relationship; you can feel the sense of awe and admiration he has for his father. Both these poems display the life experiences of belonging to a family.…

Since each author’s focus lie elsewhere, finding common ground between specific points proves difficult. Still, their agreement might find itself when directing attention to their similar approaches to explaining their theories. In this sense, their agreement has more to deal with a similar decision to include certain relationships and distinctions. During their essays, both writers introduce different relationships between authors and readers. In Woolf’s “How Should One Read a Book?” section, presents an amicable relationship at the initial reading but it dwindles once a reader finish. Unlike Woolf, Ricoeur presents a separated relationship from the start, especially explaining how he tries to treat the “author as already dead” (Ricoeur, 107).…

    Girl Can T Dance Analysis

In “Girl Can’t Dance,” Emma is upset because she made a fool of herself, People may laugh but they are also being way more nicer to her because her youtube video had gone viral on the internet. So the kids who were mean to her are starting to suck up to her to get on her good side because she is famous. An example would be, “Then the strangest thing happened. Some kids were starting to be nice to me. One day a random girl had a shirt that said Girl Can’t Dance on it”(Yee 17). This quote confirms that they are treating her differently, because before her video was online and went viral she wasn’t recognized at school. Now people are treating her different because she is famous. On the other hand, in “Good Enough,” Dori is not treated the way Emma was. Exactly it is the exact opposite Dori is treated very harshly by girls at school. She is struggling because she is being bullied for being herself. An example would be, “Caleen taunted, is that an Orion shirt?” I shook my head and kept on crying, ready for the humiliation and punishment I deserved. “No,” I blubbered and ashamed, “It’s a fake”(Pogue 14).This supports my evidence because it shows Dori is being recognized for having a Orion shirt but then tells them that she is ashamed because she wanted to be like them. In conclusion, these stories have the same conflict but are being treated differently for their…

There are also different masculine and feminine values in the story. One difference is in the value how a person uses nature. Sylvia loves nature, knows everything about the land around her home, and is trusted by the animals, “Squer’ls she’ll tame to come an’ feed right out o’ her hands, and all sorts of birds.” The boy doesn’t respect nature, mainly birds, but instead…

Expectations for girls are a lot higher and a lot more pressured than expectations for boys. Girls are expected to be pretty and nice and clean, but that is not always the case with every girl. They are expected to cook and clean as stated in Barbie Doll. “The girlchild was born as usual and presented dolls that did pee-pee and miniature GE stoves and irons.” This really shows that girls are pressured into this kind of life from an early age. After she hits puberty, expectations start to change, especially with her peers. “Then in the magic of puberty, a classmate said: you have a great big nose and fat legs.” Within her own peer group she is being mocked and put down until she can’t take it anymore. “In the casket displayed on satin she lay.” Only then did the people in her life comment on how she was pretty, but it was too late for her. In the other poem, Good Girl, girls are expected to hold up the world. “Hold up the universe, good girl.” She also gets compared to Atlas, the Greek God who holds the world on his shoulders. “Sever yourself, poor false Atlas.” Unfortunately, this is true because some women have to cook and clean the house for her family. “You are the universe about its pole. God’s not fair.” Some women even have to work for their families also and it is true that some women hold the world on their shoulders.…

    My Girl

Another important element in My Girl is the absence of parental attention or support in Vada’s life. Her father, preoccupied with his business and likely still grieving over his late wife’s death, is frequently unavailable to his daughter, both emotionally and otherwise. For instance, when Vada asks her father if she can have money to take a writing class, he is preoccupied with the television and barely looks at her, brushing off her request. Her father’s lack of attention has also likely influences Vada’s misconceptions about death; his response to Vada’s question about whether a particularly small casket is for a child is “no”, that it is simply for short people. Furthermore, when…
