Both the novel The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger and The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini portray a similar theme about the persistence of the past is able to affect someone’s life in the future. In general, the past might turn out to be something nice and memorable for some people, but some people might think that the past is something that will haunt them and they just want to forget all about it and start a new life. It is scientifically proven that repression is one of the most haunting concepts in psychology. Something shocking happens, and the mind pushes it into some inaccessible corner of the unconscious. Later, the memory may emerge into consciousness.

Not only that, it might be traumatizing for someone that their behavior changes later on. This issue can be seen in the novel The Kite Runner later on. Emotion can be defined in various ways. The past not only can influence an individual physically and emotionally, but also keeps an individual from overcoming pain and them from moving on with their life. This can be known as memory. Memory means an instant act of remembering, or a particular act of recall or recollection (merriam-webster.com). Remembering the past might be tough for some individual because they might not be ready to face the problem or they do not have the confident to face the problem. Besides that, a strong bond relationship between an individual can leave a heavy impact on someone else’s life in the future emotionally and physically. The persistence of the past including memories and also past relationships has the ability to affect an individual’s life emotionally and physically in the …show more content…
Relationships are like mathematics. Relationships are like independent variables, while the futures are like dependent variables. The independent variable is typically the variable representing the value being manipulated or changed and the dependent variable is the observed result of the independent variable being manipulated (en.wikipedia.org). ‘Then he would remind us that there was a brotherhood between people who had fed from the same breast, a kinship that even time could break. Hassan and I fed from the same breasts. We took our first steps on the same lawn in the same yard. And, under the same roof, we spoke our first words. Mine was Baba. His was Amir. My name.’ (Hosseini, pg) Amir and Hassan are like brothers, although one of them comes from the wealthy family while the other one is just a servant. In this novel, oppression between classes cannot be found. Amir and Hassan are like real brothers, they learn to walk together, they learn to speak together, and they fed from the same breast. After the incident where Hassan got raped, Amir felt so guilty that he chased Hassan out of the house. This proves that having a strong bond relationship can affect the future of an individual’s life emotionally and

Life is a balancing act between the past, present, and future. Expressing guilt and regret about the past is almost instinctual, but we accept that it is unchangeable and we put it behind us. However, there are some, who so desperately cling to the idea of the past and believe that they have the power to repeat it. While an action can be repeated in order to emulate an action of the past, the entirety of the moment can never be recreated. This is due to the fact that unlike a physical action, the emotions and intent behind the action are impossible to duplicate.…

While Amir found himself falling for a beautiful woman named Soraya, as well focused on Baba’s health. The people and environment someone surrounds themselves affect a person greatly. For instance, when someone is a part of a friend group that they are around with constantly, they start to pick up on small things that person does and slowly they become like their friends. So in the same way, when the two of them hurt Hassan, they were both unable to look at him without feeling that guilt. As well when you are involved in a large friend group it is easy to develop “favorites”, people are often drawn to others who are similar. In this way Baba was always drawn to Hassan more than Amir, Amir was most likely more like his mother which affected their relationship greatly. Once Baba and Amir went to America it was just the two of them, they were finally able to be father and son. Sharing little jokes, laughing together, eventually working together as well. Both Afghanistan and America had huge effects on Baba and Amir’s relationship, the different environments caused an immense impact on the way they treated each…

There is a reoccurring theme in the novel 1984, by George Orwell. The main character, Winston Smith is often fantasizing about his utopia, and dreaming about past events. In a world where everyone is controlled and everything is decided for you, Winston relies on his subconscious mind to maintain his sanity.

Winston works rewriting the past in a department for the Party. His memories of the past are usually the opposite of the Party's version of the past. Winston is very confused about whether or not he is losing his mind. His dreams reveal the reality of the Party and the truth of the past, enabling him to trust his own instinct of what is right and wrong, keeping it clear in his mind what the past was really like. Memories are the piece of our soul who make us who we are. I have chosen to explore the theme ‘Memories and the past can affect the future’. This theme is evident in the novels The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd, Before You by Amber Hart and If I Stay by Gayle Forman. It is also apparent in the film The Time Traveller’s Wife directed by Robert Schwentke.…

Research has shown that memory is malleable and has a tendency to inaccurately reconstruct the past (Loftus and Palmer, 1997), however this does not stop the human mind having an ability to reconstruct past events with great detail. Research suggests that depressed people have difficulty remembering specific events, instead they are much more likely to over-generalise their memories of specific negative instances into prolonged periods of time which are more consistently negative than they were in reality.…

“Do not brood over your past mistakes and failures as this will only fill your mind with grief, regret and depression. Do not repeat them in the future.” -Swami Sivananda. In the poem Itinerary, speaker Eamon Grennan demonstrates the ways in which individuals deal with the uncertainties of the past. The past has the ability to influence an individual to either move on despite the uncertainties and worries of the unknown, or to not move on at all. However it is important to do your best to move on and focus on the present and the future. This is also true in my own life. When faced with uncertainties of the past, an individual may choose a method of isolation because they are frightened to move on. They also may try to relive certain moments from the past in an attempt to find comfort in anything familiar to them. The individual will attempt to do so until they let go of the past and look at a broader perspective on life, which will assist them in moving on to see what the future holds.…

Whether their memories are positive or negative, they will all take an impact on how you will become as a person. It has been stated in the Identity Theory and I believe that the theory is correct based on my own personal life. I had a difficult childhood growing up, but those experiences have taught me to be the person I am. My bullying has caused a large injury to my childhood, but learning my lessons on how to fight back and be an advocate changed the person I become. I am an avid fighter for justice and doing the right thing. Thus, I believe it is completely reasonable to change your identity based on the experiences you have and will experience in your…

I believe completely the antithesis of Loftus that researching suppressed memories does more harm than good. There are elements of denial in seeking different avenues to confronting the problems of everyday life head on. A person has to be slowly introduced to perhaps repressed memories from early traumatic experiences to slowly, but surely, have the person moving in the right direction of personal disclosure for an issue that could be taking preeminence in their life. Just like in shock therapy, it might be painful or hurtful to uncover the past and all it comes with to do the correct thing and disentangling the web, many times, we create out of fear to see what we find out about ourselves. Therefore, I disagree wholeheartedly with the notion that merely probing the psyche for what is considered a "suppressed memory", has devastating effects on a person's image appraisal and schema orientations based on their supposed " traumatic events". How can a person come to understand whether or not, what they are feeling is really disconcerting or not. Yet again, one must consider empathy in its truest form in that the manner that a person approaches a needing other, has immense ramifications to how much they are willing to reveal about themselves, which is everything because, when a person starts opening up to you, then real in roads of improvement can take place for their self-image and self-esteem issues.…

I will then be looking at some of the other popular theories within psychotherapy and highlighting the basic assumptions of these theories and how these all seem to have grounding in suggesting that the past is affecting the present, which would seem to support the statement that “you can never leave the past behind you”. For example, while growing up I remember not being able to trust people. I always saw people do different than what they said and never kept their promises. This brought me a great deal of trust issues. After the feelings of betrayal and hopelessness my behavior began to change, I became more conservative, lonely, and doubtful of people. Any events that are traumatic enough can trigger the time perspective our mind focuses on, and of course our attitude. Past negative people will remember the most negative and traumatic events they lived in the past and tend to dwell on them for their entire life. Meaning, they will always remember feelings of trauma, failure and frustration. Fearing they will experience the same circumstance past negative people become conservative and focused. Being high past negative also has a positive side, Dr. Zimbardo states that past negative person has a sense of personal continuity or a stable sense of self…
