Comparing The Pilgrimage To The Life Of A Muslim
Hajj is the largest annual pilgrimage in the world. It takes place in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. For Muslims, Hajj is a requirement they have to complete once in your lifetime as it is considered one of the five pillars in Islam that disciplines the life of a Muslim. The word Hajj means “to unceasingly attempt to reach one’s goal”. This pilgrimage is considered a once in a lifetime duty of the Muslims who are financially capable of affording the journey and physically strong to complete the pilgrimage. Approximately two million people around the world go to Mecca every year to participate in this pilgrimage. The Hajj is performed in the 12th month of the Islamic calendar which is built on the lunar calendar, and these dates will differ from the Gregorian

    When Martin Luther posted the 95 theses in 1517, he had changed the entire path of European politics and religion. He sparked a thought in the region that in many cases, converted people’s basic Christian beliefs. At the time, the Roman Catholic Church was the most powerful Institution. However, there were many corruptions and problematic doctrines, which Luther opposed. Though most commoners became followers because of faith, political leaders sometimes became protestant for other reasons. One important figure that was influenced by this protestant reformation was King Henry VIII of England. A monarch, he had a great desire to have a son that would be his heir, the next king. Unfortunately, his first wife was only able to birth one daughter. By then Henry VIII had formed a relationship with another woman. This one promised him a son. However, the Catholic Church forbade divorce and Henry VIII was Catholic at the time. To resolve this issue, England separated from the church and began the Anglican Church, a church headed by Henry VIII himself. The Act of Supremacy in 1534 officially began England’s Protestant Reformation. With this new power of the state over the church, the head of the King’s Council, Thomas Cromwell, carried out new government policies which included new taxes, increased power of the monarchy in Northern England, dissolution of Roman Catholic monasteries, and confiscation of the lands that belong to the Church. Enraged, commoners and nobles alike began marching and protesting in what was known collectively as the Pilgrimage of Grace. These individuals that numbered in the tens of thousands, marched for political and religious reasons, while the opposition also claimed political and religious reasons for the protests to stop.…

    The book begins with "The Author's Apology for his Book." This portion of the book, written in verse, aims to explain the author's purpose. He wrote the book, he writes, not for the benefit of his neighbors: "I did it mine own self to gratifie" (5). He acknowledges that people had differing opinions about whether he should publish it and what he should include, but he decided to proceed and instructs those who aren't interested to refrain from reading it. He then defends the style in which he has chosen to write. He argues that God often communicated by metaphor in scripture, and thus, Bunyan, too is justified in using this style of writing (8). He argues that he writes from a place of truth, and that would come through no matter the style in which he presents his words. He continues his defense of the genre until he openly defends the language he uses: "this book is writ in such a dialect, / as may the minds of listless men affect" (11). He finishes by calling the reader to read with "heart and head together" (12). In his dream, the author describes a man with a heavy burden upon his back, crying in agony. His wife and children think that the man overreacting and dismiss him as ill. The man is extremely agitated by what he has read in his book (the Bible), which leads him to believe that, because of his sins, he has been condemned to die. The Evangelist comes and tells the man to embark on a pilgrimage, instructing him that the Wicket Gate is the first stop on his journey to deliverance. The man takes the Evangelist's word and flees in the direction of the shining light, even though his family calls for him to stay.…
