Comparing The First Seven Years And I Wish I Had Said
Throughout the texts, “The First Seven Years,” the story of Jacob and Rachel, the poem, "I Wish I Had Said...," and the Time article, the common theme of love is treated similarly and differently. For example, in the Time article and “First Seven Years,” both of the main characters are playing matchmaker and trying to find a person a spouse. Feld is trying to play matchmaker and find Miriam a young, good looking man to be her husband, but Miriam has different ideas, when she discovers Max is boring and a materialist. Similarly, since the Time article has matchmaker, Erin Davis, the texts are related because they are both trying to find people that they will fall in love with. In contrast, parents like Laban, Rachel’s father, decides who she

After reading the two short stories, Love in L.A by Dagoberto Gilb and What We Talk about When We Talk about Love by Raymond Carver, I have realized that a common feeling like ‘love’ can be painted into so many different pictures. Each one of these short stories is written by two different authors and sees ‘love’ at different angles. The character Jake in Love in L.A. has this vision of love that is more of a mockery. Then, Terri’s ex-husband in What We talk about When We Talk about Love has so much passion, but the kind of passion that can be interoperated as obsession. The lies and misconceptions of ‘love’ that Jake and Terri’s ex-husband display reveal that ‘love’ does not exist in a world filled with nothing but cruelty and evil actions.…

Another example is the story of Jacob and Rachel, Laban, altho he told him seven years, made Jacob work a total of fourteen years so that he could wed Racheal. Finally, because she did not like the new way to find a date, Erin Davis made a dating service. Erin Davis of New York City created a new way for singles to match, but it was for men and women of the Jewish faith. A difference from the rest of the stories…

What is love? In “Araby,” this uncertainty is shown as the young boy describes his feelings about Mangan’s sister; “Her name sprang to my lips at moments in strange prayers and praises which I myself did not understand.” (323). This boy is describing what it is like to feel desire and attraction to someone, but how can he understand that at his age? The boy is only twelve or thirteen. How can he know what love is when Gabriel can not even figure out if what he feels for Gretta is love or not: “He had never felt like himself towards any woman but he knew that such a feeling must be love.”(172). If there is no definition of love, then what are the two characters chasing? As well, just like in real life, James Joyce does not give any answers to the questions his stories create which in return resembles how love is complicated and is ultimately hard to…

Love is one of the only words in this world that can’t be adequately described in words. Yet it is the strongest human emotion and most powerful force in the universe that conquers all, makes our lives worth living, and chooses our direction. In the two short stories the authors use their style, symbolism and point of views to best portray two different scenarios that both revolve around love. In “Good People” by David Foster Wallace 19 year old college student impregnates a girl he’d been seeing and is plagued with many uncertainties of life and love and is forced to make a difficult decision in the case of an abortion. In “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love” by Raymond Carver two couples sit around a table and attempt to discuss which knows more about true love while they drink gin. In the end, they both share a common theme; that love is ambiguous.…

Firstly, both authors use character development to convey this message of the effects of lost love on the main characters in both novels. Both Florentino Ariza (Love in the Time of Cholera) and David Lambert (A Scientific Romance) fail to develop as individuals in the stories. Florentino Ariza begins as a young man who has dedicated his entire life to Fermina Daza. He spends hours writing passionate letters to her and every day of his life is consumed by the thought of her. In the following quotation Florentino reveals his eternal love for Fermina: “I have waited for this opportunity for more than half a century, to repeat to you once again my vow of eternal fidelity and everlasting love.” (Marquez 50). It is clear that Florentino would give anything to be with Fermina as his love for her is immeasurable. When Fermina becomes…

Ever since the dawn of time, love has been a fundamental part of every human 's lives. Northern Lights demonstrates to us that the love of a friend or the love of spouse can create either great power or bring misery and unhappiness. Iorek and Lyra are a perfect example a powerful relationship. Iorek has been denied power, Lyra is on a quest to find power and with out the love the two shared as friends, neither would be able to complete their missions. However, this is not to say the love and power are a perfect combination. To illustrate, look at Mrs. Coulter and Lord Asriel. "His hands, still clasped her head, tensed suddenly and drew her towards him in a passionate kiss. Lyra thought this looked more like cruelty than love" both are powerful in their own right, but neither is truly happy with the other. They cannot agree or conform with each others beliefs of Dust, meaning no physical love could keep them together. Although there was a strong romantic interest between the two, both came from different sides of power, her religion and he science. Northern Lights shows its readers that when true love is evident, than true power is achievable.…

This story I would say is just a story of two lovers and the conflict of love and honor. I would agree with this because throughout the entire play the two main themes are these two in which they go to and they discuss these. There can be other topics found throughout this play that may be considered themes. The main theme though between those two I would think that honor is a lot more re-occurring then love because honor is the basis of it all because if his father was dishonored then he himself would have been dishonored as well. Honor at this time of history was a lot more important than love was. That is something that can be proven by King Henry VIII who founded his own branch of religion so he could get a divorce so he would be able to produce a male heir to his thrown. This is just one example of how honor was more important than love, because King Henry VIII would much rather have a male heir than be with a woman that he loves because he feels the honor of the kingship is much more important.…

The “Love” text is a narrative with samples of dialogue. Moving on the context, we see the main characters: a man – the father and a boy – the son. The author doesn’t mention their names. The reader can assume that it is a farmer and his son, because the author mentions that they are cared for and monitor the corn field.…
