This was due to the character’s characteristics, and the costumes of the characters, in both the 2014 and 1996 versions of the well known movie.
“ I do not bite my thumb at you, sir,” the Montague replied terrified, voice quivering, as the Capulet boys intensely glared at the Montague boys, while taking their weapons out. The sentence above is a description of a part of a scene, from the 1996 modernised version of Romeo and Juliet. The description above suggests that the Capulet family had more power than the Montague family did, and that the Montague feared the Capulet. In the original Shakespearean version, this was not how the two families were portrayed. This statement is proved throughout the 2014 play version of Romeo and Juliet. This is because the actors acting in this play are seen wearing togas, which are outer garments worn by the citizens of ancient Rome. Togas are made of a single piece of cloth and cover the whole body with the exception of the right arm. The actors wearing the togas helped set the time Romeo and Juliet took place in according to Shakespeare, and helped the language the original script was written in make sense. This was due to the fact that as togas were worn by people who lived long ago, it would be associated with the past, which would go with the Shakespearean language used throughout the play, as the language Shakespeare wrote Romeo and Juliet in was used a long time ago. In addition, the two things mentioned are those we currently do not use as a part of our daily lives, therefore are foreign to us. As using old fashioned clothing helped communicate Shakespearean language more effectively, the clothing style of the actors from the 2014 play portrayed the original story of Romeo and Juliet better, because it allowed the script of the play to make sense as both the script and the clothing of the actors were old, which went with the setting of the story, as it took place a long time ago. Unlike the 2014 play, this was not found in the 1996 version of Romeo and Juliet. This was because the clothing style of the 1996
