Comparing Ponyboy And Cherry Valance
PART ONE
1. Compare Ponyboy and Cherry Valance.
Ponyboy and Cherry Valance are quite similar in many ways; there are not many differences between them. Ponyboy and Cherry Valance are both dreamers that watch sunsets and dislike fighting, and when Cherry brought up that “It’s rough all over” Ponyboy thought about it and came to the conclusion that she was right. It seems like the only differences between them are their views on the Soc, Bob (Cherry sees the good in Bob, but Ponyboy does not) and that they are from different groups, Cherry being a Soc and Ponyboy being a Greaser.

2. Describe Ponyboy’s relationship with his brother, Darry. How did the relationship between Darry and Ponyboy change after Ponyboy ran away and after Johnny turned

He and Ponyboy saved several lives when no one else would or could, and I would have thought that it was worth it too if I were Johnny. He wrote that he’d been thinking a lot about the poem that Ponyboy recited to him, and that he thought that he figured out what it meant. “…you’re gold when you’re a kid… When you’re a kid everything’s new, dawn. It’s just that when you get used to everything that it’s day.” I agree that when you’re a kid everything is new and good and “dawn”, and as you grow older and get used to everything dawn becomes day. Seeing new, seeing dawn, seeing sunsets, is seeing the good- and that was why Johnny told Ponyboy to tell Dally to look at a sunset, because he’d probably never seen one, he’s never seen the good, which is why Dally hates the world. Johnny also concluded that being a Greaser isn’t such a bad thing because you can still make yourself what you want to be. I agree with that- being born in a certain social class shouldn’t bother you because it should not stop you from being what you want to be. Lastly, Johnny told Ponyboy in his letter that there is still a lot of good in the world, and I agree with that too, because although it may seem that the world is full of only bad things, it’s really

It’s surprising that Ponyboy described Johnny as looking as cool as Darry ever had because before he called him a puppy that was lost, everyone’s “kid brother” and the Gang’s “pet.” He really was pushed over the edge and couldn’t take any more of being silent and not taking action, if it wasn’t for him killing Bob, he and Ponyboy would both be…

The Socs are known for jumping the greasers and the ended up circling the park. They stopped the car and got out, a fight broke out. “I felt the blood draining from my face,” said Ponyboy (S.E.Hinton page 48). The fight didn’t end the way that anyone thought it would. Ponyboy looked at Johnny and Johnny was out of it, but Ponyboy didn’t know why. The fight continued, but not for very long. “Bob, the handsome Soc, was lying there in the moonlight, doubled up and still. A dark pool was growing from him, spreading slowly over the blue white cement, “ (S.E.Hinton page 49). Johnny had killed Bob, they didn’t want that to happened. Pony’s realization stems from a comment Johnny makes after reading a passage from Gone with the Wind, in which he says that Dally reminds him of one of the gallant Southern gentlemen from the Civil War. The fact that Dally is too “real” for Ponyboy reveals something about his narrative perspective. He says earlier that the other greasers—Soda, Darry, and Two-Bit—remind him more of the heroes in his books than Dally does. Ponyboy feels more comfortable with Soda, Darry, and Two-Bit because as a narrator, and later a writer, he is more comfortable with fictional heroes than with real people like Dally who have lost their…

Ponyboy is the protagonist who narrates the novel, he often refers to himself as different from the other Greasers in the way he values education, and how he shows both academic interest and ability. The book mentions Ponyboy being an A grade student, unlike the other Greasers who dropped out of school early and worked. This is shown when Ponyboy says, “my second-oldest brother, Soda… never cracks a book at all, and my oldest brother, Darrel… works too long and hard to be interested in a story or drawing a picture, so I’m not like them.” (p. 1-2). As the book develops and major events like Johnny’s death take place this attitude towards education weakens and Pony no longer values nor cares for it. This can be seen when pony tells the readers, “I was lousing up on school-work… I used to make A’s in English… Now I was lucky to get a D on a composition.” (p.204). This shows just how much the main events, especially the death of Johnny have impacted on Pony and his value for education sending him from A’s to D’s.…
