While riding his bike, he no longer has to reminisce as much about the things that trouble him in life. Contrary to his normal personality, while riding his bike he feels brave, courageous, and free. While he is in the hospital, he often thinks about how it would feel to ride his bike and feel the wind in his hair again. This is just one of the many examples where he shows the immense love he has for his

In This Boy's Life, a memoir by Tobias Wolff, as Jack ages, he loses innocence. In the novel, innocence is portrayed as simplicity and childishness, which Jack aims to lose as he develops. Wolff develops this theme through Jack's quest for masculinity, which he views as power. Guns and abusive male figures serve as recurring motifs for his diminishing innocence. Jack's search for masculinity dilutes his idealistic core as he changes his character to match what he believes is powerful; thus causing the withering of his innocence and complete loss of innocence at the end of the novel.…

A main characteristic and cause of immaturity is the overuse and dependence on imagination. This is displayed in children but also in Toby Wolff’s memoir This Boy’s Life. Toby frequently uses his imagination as both an escape and a shield from the harsh reality of his own current status. As a child, Toby would utilize his creativity to picture himself living a successful lifestyle instead of the poverty he was raised in. Even as he grew older, Toby would never be able to see himself anyway other than the identity he created for himself. Because Toby uses his creativity to re-invent a persona for himself in whatever way that pleases him, he does not ever truly consider the further consequences of his actions, contributing to his lack of foresight…
