Comparing Ambassador Burlington 'And General Christmas'
Both Ambassador Burlington and General Christmas have been in positions of great importance and responsibility, this is because throughout their career they have upheld the highest standards of leadership. Their Presentations served to exemplify the traits that are valuable in a leader. Although they showed leadership in the midst of war, these principles can be applied to everyday situations. Ambassador Burlington served in the consulate in Hue, South Vietnam and as staff aid to the Ambassador at the embassy in Saigon, it was there that he proved his capacity as an able leader. On May 17th, Ambassador Burlington demonstrated communication, confidence, commitment, creativity, approach, and intuition. When he returned to the consulate after the attempted murder of General Cao he showed a clear commitment to his post. Then when he transmitted President Johnson’s message to Thich Tri Quang he showed his ability to communicate. In his opinion there are six traits that embody leadership, confidence, candor, courage, compassion, consistency and commitment. These are traits that can be applied to any circumstance and any form of leadership. Furthermore, his point of view on leadership isn’t something that can be inferred from just reading his story. By sharing his inside with us he gave us a perspective we didn’t previously have. Clearly, both General Christmas and Ambassador Burlington are living examples of leadership. Their bravery and courage in a time of war serves as an inspiration to future leaders as ourselves. By seeing them present and not just reading about their experiences we got a better understanding of leadership. Although the situations in which we will be leaders during our trip differ greatly from theirs, I think their message was universal and will help me greatly on the trip and in
