think Odysseus and his wife Penelope are perfect for each other and were meant to be together. I also believe Odysseus and Penelope's story is a very good example of how most military families function. I can relate to their story just a little bit because my husband was in the Air Force for six years. My husband served in the Air Froce from 2001 until 2007. He left for basic training just a couple months after the attack on September 11. The six years that he was in the military we got to experience one deployment.…

He is favored by Athena the goddess of wisdom. When dealing with the cyclops Polyphemus, Odysseus manages to get the cyclops drunk, blinds him, uses the cyclops’ sheep to get out of the cave, and uses the clever name “Nobody” to disguise his identity(although in an irrational moment he reveals himself and is cursed by Poseidon). Inquires Journals claims “this act of sheer cunning depicts Odysseus as a shrewd character who actively outthinks his opponents in whatever challenge with which he is encumbered” (Tartell). Also, the choice of Scylla rather than Charybdis quickly reveals Odysseus's quick thinking skills. He manages to drag his crew away from the Lotus Eaters and goes to the Underworld to get advice from Tireaisa. Also, with the aid of Hermes, he resists Circe’s spell and convinces her to release his men. He gets him and his crew out of many peroulis…

On the subject of heroism, Maya Angelou once wrote that “I think a hero is any person really intent on making this a better place for all people” (Angelou). The general picture that comes to mind when the word “hero” is said is the idea of Superman or Wonder Woman; however, a true hero is anyone who tries to make their world a better place. Odysseus, the hero in Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, fought in the Trojan War and embarked on a ten year journey to return to his kingdom, Ithaca. During his quest to return home, he encounters many supernatural forces that show both his heroic, and not so heroic actions. He faces countless challenges, meets new people, and has to make sacrifices for the overall benefit of his crew (Bowler and Homer 645-705).…
