Tom uses his money to only please himself he is very self centered. Where gatsby only uses his money to please Daisy and please others because he thinks that spending money on people will make them like him but truthfully people are just using him. Toms lives in East egg where the old money is “ Tom deferred that much to the sensibilities of those East Eggers who might be on the train.” Gatsby lives in West egg where the new money is “I lived at West Egg, the—well, the less fashionable of the two, though this is a most superficial tag to express the bizarre and not a little sinister contrast between them.” They are both rich but the difference is that Tom doesn't work he inherited his money and just spend it and gatsby did earn his money but he did it illegally. Gatsby is a party animal who throws parties he has a new up beat personality who has a huge mansion garishly decorated he dresses bright and catches people's eyes “It was Gatsby’s mansion.
