Compare And Contrast Those Winter Sundays And The Secret Heart
‘“The Secret Heart”, by Robert Peter Tristram, was about the narrator’s father showing him love by checking on him while he is sleeping, to ensure that the narrator was safe and sleeping peacefully. The poem by Robert Hayden, “Those Winter Sundays”, was about the narrator being ungrateful to his father and did not appreciate the things his father did for him. The theme that both poems have in common was that you should express your love before it is too late. From the poem, “The Secret Heart”, the father had shown his love for his son by making sure his son is safe while sleeping. Another evidence is that the narrator included “Across the years..” This had shown that the father did not show his love once, but many times to the narrator by making

The father never cared for how early and how cold it was, he would always get up take care of the fire not for himself but for the family. From the beginning of the story and all throughout the boys shows his father-son love that he does not understand and fully appreciate until he is reminiscing about his father and how he always got up early, even on Sundays. Some parents show love and affection whereas others shape their children with respect and stern discipline. In the poems "Those Winter Sundays" by Robert Hayden and "My Papa's Waltz" by Theodore Roethke, a relationship between a father and son are portrayed as both authors reflect on their own childhood experiences. While the two poems have similarities; in that, the fathers work hard and believe in stern punishment, they also have several contrasting ideas in parenting that separate their respective roles as fathers.…

Have you ever heard stories on the internet or the news of people getting shot or being hurt by bullying? In the story “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury and in “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. people are getting hurt two different ways, but in the act of jealousy. In “All Summer in a Day”, a girl name Margot (on Venus) knows more about the sun than the other children, yet, instead of the other children wanting to know more and hearing her out, they put her in a closet. And in “Harrison Bergeron”, there’s a handicap general who forces everyone to wear some kind of tech/gear to hide their strengths. People can be easily manipulated to go one way or the other, for people may know more, seen more, or have more than them and treat them…

The second part of the poem ‘Nightfall’ continues the story of the child forty years from ‘Barn owl’, where she had lost her innocence by shooting an owl and this had resulted in a heavy hearted guilt which was caused by her unknowing and stubborn actions. The poem represents death closing in on the father, and the limitations of time on their relationship that was never experienced before in her younger years. The father, who in the first poem is depicted as an “old no-sayer”, is now held in high esteem, he is admired and respected as an “old king”. The extended metaphor “Since there is no more to taste ripeness is plainly all. Father we pick our last fruits of the temporal.” Appeals to our senses and is now an aural metaphor, it illustrates the father’s life becoming fulfilled or ripe, it has come near to its end and the father and child will now spend or pick the last moments of the father’s life together. Over time her appreciation of her father has changed, this is shown through “Who can be what you were?” and “Old King, your marvellous journey’s done.” She has realised the valuable life her father has led and the great loss that will be felt after he is gone. The child, now a grown woman learns another lesson about death, it can be quiet and peaceful, and “Your night and day…

“Those Winter Sundays,” Robert Hayden and “My Papa’s Waltz,” Theodore Roethke describe the emotional and personal relationship between the son and their father. Both narrators seem to be reflecting on a childhood memory of their father. The two poems, “Those Winter Sundays” and “My Papa’s Waltz,” show a father’s love for his family. “Those Winter Sundays” in line 12, Hayden states, “Polished my good shoes as well.” In the poem “My Papa’s Waltz” (line 13-14), Roethke speaks, “You beat time on my head, with a palm caked hard by dirt.” The narrators indicate that their fathers were hard working and took care of their family. The two poems are parallel in topic, but differ in theme and voice of the narrator and tone.…

When the house is already warm the speaker rise up from bed too and meet his father but not with any kind of affection but a bit afraid of him instead. The main theme of the poem is to illustrate the way his dad takes care of his son, the speaker. By that time, I personally believe that the speaker was young and did not understand much about love back then. Now that he has a mature mentality and has the capacity to comprehend this, he realize that his father was not just the “chronic anger” father and now he understand his father’s behavior that (lighting the fires, shining the shoes) was an expression of fatherly love.…

“Those Winter Sundays” and “My Papa’s Waltz” were written by two different authors so naturally there are some differences within them. Roethke chose to use closed form in "My Papa 's Waltz" so the work has a distinct structure and rhyme scheme. There are four stanzas within the poem, and each stanza consists of four lines and has a rhyme scheme of A-B; A-B. For example if one was to look at the final words per line for the first stanza, they would find it reads as follows “breath, dizzy, death, easy.” On the other hand, Robert Hayden uses a very different form to create "Those Winter Sundays." Hayden uses open form which demonstrates varying length of the poem 's three stanzas and the different count of each line. The style that Hayden chose for his work allows the poem to be read in a manner that resembles a conversation.…

Vincent Millay’s it is about how her lovers have come and gone. Which is like Bishops poem because in a way she is losing over and over again because she says “I cannot say what loves have come and gone.” Referring to the love she has lost over time because she is no longer in love with them, or she was still in love with them where they were not in love with her anymore. She then says “And in my heart there stirs a quiet pain” is stating her heart is hurting because she is lonely now reminiscing on the love she once had, and she does not have now. In this poem I strongly believe like we talked about in class is her remembering of all of her past lovers, or that she does not have anyone to love her anymore. Which is a lot like Bishops poem granted bishops poem was not all about love, but we can infer that towards the end of the poem it was. Due to the fact in the end of the poem is talking about the suicide of her lover. The love she lost and how she was not a disaster when clearly she was left in a state of loneliness just like Millay’s in her poem. Millay’s diction tells us she is lonely by stating “I have forgotten, and what arms have lain” meaning that she forgets what a lover’s arms feel…

"Love", is often an unrequited emotion experienced by many parental figures. This is displayed in the poem, "Those Winter Sundays" by Robert Hayden where the speaker is recalling of a time during his childhood where he contemplates the sacrifices his father made for him. The line, "Sundays too my father got up early (Line 1)", entails that his or her father awoke every morning and with "cracked hands that ached from labour (Line 3)", undergone his daily routine as the speaker remained oblivious to his father's enormous efforts. It also implies that as young individuals we are often oblivious of the sacrifices that result from parental love.…

Everyone has a particular trait which makes them unique and different from others; it can lead someone into feeling either strong and confident or unsettled and distressed. This makes up who they personally are, exposing their true feelings and emotions. “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury and “Believer” by Imagine Dragons both use this universal truth to uncover some character’s true traits, bringing out their difference in the shadow to an even darker figure. In each story, the character’s end up with a heavy heart, standing out there alone and regretting their isolation. The film version of ¨A Christmas Carol¨ is extremely more preferable. The literature version just simply doesn't give off as much of a mood, the text is extremely too dull. In written form the story isn't pulling me in, and appears like a fantasy. The text is just not appealing, and that's the main reason why the movie is better. Although I love to read, I like watching movies better. Both the movie, and the story are very fun to watch and read. I recommend you to check them out, they'll most likely both be found at the nearest public library.…

Love, relationship, and sacrifice are very common in a relationship between two people. In the short stories of “Tommy” by Kelly Ruth Winter and “The Night of Oranges” by Flavius Stan shows these themes that the characters go through. However, there are also differences between the two stories and how they interact with their loved ones. For instances, Winter continued in love with Tommy throughout her life and Stan shows his love for his brother by buying a gift for him on Christmas.
