Compare And Contrast The Three Fifths Compromise

The three-fifths compromise was system in between the states to determine a person who is enslaved as a three-fifths of a person. The south was overpopulated and continued to grow due to slavery James Wilson proposed this in 1787 and this showed how proslavery was forced during those times. Because the Virginia Plan was denied, the three-fifths compromise was suggested and made the cut for the south to be powerfully represented in the House of Representatives and have too much power when electing presidents. Compared to the northerner states they seemed to disregard slavery. The difference between he northerner states and southern was that the northerner states counted one free man as one vote and one slave not a vote to southern states counting the slaves as a vote as well as one free man as a vote. The constitution also supported the three-fifths compromise. In the constitution, Article 1 section II, it states, “The House of Representatives shall be composed of …show more content…
The Fifth Amendment made sure no personal or property shall be in danger twice and private property could not be trespassed. The Dred Scott case viewed the three-fifths compromise differently than the constitution; meaning one was supported and the other was not. The constitution declared political power amongst the states while the Dred Scott case fought for slaves to be free. Comparing both made me understand the issues that were debated and the history behind each one. Being free in who you are or who you want to be is very important and that is why I agree with the Dred Scott case. Today, federal spending is a based on congressional representation instead of the relative population. With knowing this, it shows how things with representation issues are still being administered and how history keeps going and some may repeat
