Compare and contrast the texture and structure of Beethoven, Bach and Sweelinck? Beethoven’s Septet in E flat movement is in sonata form with a slow introduction and the component parts are defined by changes of key, same goes for the development section. The coda is also much longer than earlier composers of the classical era would have written. The Introduction of the movement starts at bar 1 and carries on until bar 17. The introduction is in the key of E flat which is the Tonic key but it also has modulations. The exposition of the work lasts from bars 18-111; the 1st subject is at bars 18-39 and the work stays in the key E flat. At bar 40-52 the transition begins to modulate the work to B flat, the dominant key, for the 2nd subject from bars 53-98. There is then a Codetta from bar 98 to bar 111. Next there is the development section which lasts from bars 111-153. From bar 116 the work starts to move through related and unrelated keys. The work starts passing through C minor then to A flat at bar 124, F minor at bar 136 and then the development section finishes with dominant preparation at bar 140. Lastly there is the recapitulation section from bar 154-233. The recapitulation of the work is always similar to the exposition in sonata form however it doesn’t modulate to the dominant key, it stays in the tonic. The 1st subject starts at bar 154 and finishes at bar 181, the transition is then goes on from bar 182-187, the 2nd section starts and finishes at bar 188-233 then to finish the work off there is a CODA from bar 233 until the end. Sweelinck’s structure is a tripartite structure with repeated sections; each of these sections is called a strain. The A section starts at bar 1-16 and ends with a A minor perfect cadence, straight afterwards the repeats of the A section, Variation of A, starts at bar 17-32 and yet again ends in a A minor Perfect cadence.
