ENG2D1 Summative Essay
The short stories I’m comparing are “The Address” by Marga Minco and “A cap for Steve” by Morley Callaghan. Both stories are diverse as they don’t have much in common, yet rather talk about the significance of life and what values matter most. I’ll show the differences in the main characters, the setting of where each story takes place, and the plot of both short stories.

The characters in both short stories have different motivations, yet each character realizes the values that matter to them the most. In “A cap for Steve” the setting takes place in a town where wealth in an area matters, as it divides the rich and the poor. In the area where I live in, it somewhat works like that where all the middle class families live together and all the low income families live together. In “The Address” it clearly talks about where all the dialogue and action is taking place. It takes place in Holland, Netherlands in a Jewish neighborhood because that’s where the address is.
The authors of these two short stories (Morley Callaghan and Marga Minco) both have different styles when it comes to writing short stories like these. “A cap for Steve” is written in first person view so most of the dialogue is between Steve and his father. That gives me sense that Morley Callaghan who wrote this short story, wants the reader to act out as the person and wants the reader to be the character. “The Address” is written in third person view so most of the dialogue is the protagonist explaining her past. That gives me sense that Marga Minco who wrote this short story, wants the reader to feel what the character is describing her
