They lived in the lower floor of the castle with other knights because there was enough space there. In document E written by Sir Thomas Malory it says “ to be loyal to the king, to give mercy to those asking it…” In the piece “to give mercy to those asking it” meant that they would not hurt you if you asked for mercy. Therefore, if you were a knight and a samurai asked for mercy, you would not kill. Due to that belief, it gave the samurai’s an advantage. Also, in the same text it also mentions that the knights are to do no wicked deed. They could not do anything wrong or make a fool of themselves. It would not be right if they hurt…

In document C1 written by PBS says "The rigorous training of samurai began when they were children. In their schooling they had physical training and learned poetry and spiritual discipline. The young warriors studied Kendo, the moral code of the samurai, and Zen Buddhism." This helps the samurai because since they were being taught Kendo, which is the code, that helps them understand what they should be doing and why. Another piece of evidence that supports this claim is written in document C1 by PBS. It says "Girls also received martial arts training. Samurai women did not usually fight on the battlefield, but they were prepared to defend their homes against invaders." This is a good thing because girls actually get training too. So if they get invaded by bad people, the girls can be ready to fight…

Another piece that shows that Samurais OR Knights could win is in document E also but written by Sir Thomas Malory. It states, ¨...Solemnly promising to do, not wicked deed, to be loyal to the king, to give mercy to those asking it.” Samurais were also loyal to their king(emperor), but knights gave mercy to anybody who was willing to ask for it. The poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, supposedly written in the mid to late fourteenth century, shows the decline of both the code of Chivalry and of Feudalism. In a desperate effort to reinforce the ideals of Feudalism, the poet, evidently bias towards the Christian church and its values, use the female gender as the primary causes of this decay. At the time, the religious values were deeply weakened by the conflict between religious love and courtly love and also by an always underlying “Code of Chivalry” which had changed from a set of Christian to a set of immoral values. This process of Christian decay was highly influenced by the rise of courtly love in which the knights were led to feats of bravery and devotion to a mistress rather than God.…

Had the infiltration of individualism, liberalism, utilitarianism and materialism corrupt the once glorious and honorable society of Japan? Or perhaps had it enlightened their society to a new way of thinking? To answer these questions I'd like to give a brief highlight of how women were viewed in Japanese Culture prior to the infiltration of the western ideology. To do so I will be referencing Andrew Gordon's book entitled: A Modern History of Japan.…
