Compare and contrast on Travelling in the Glass Castle
They say life is a rollercoaster and you have your ups and downs; But Jeannette Wall’s rollercoaster is a steep and twisted ride. Being the middle child in her family she has 2 sisters and a brother. Jeannette and her siblings are dragged all across of America because of her father’s actions. Being so young she has lived in more places than the average human. Venturing from Arizona to California then back to Arizona then to
West Virginia and living in multiple tiny towns it’s hard to make friends and keep those friends. On their journey around America the children learn the value of money and how important it is. Learning how carless and selfish their parent’s actions are, they learned how to be independent and take care of themselves. In the end her parents aren’t so…kind of.

Money plays in everything. Everyday life to spending it on luxury’s like Chocolate or the movies. It plays a big part in the glass castle because from the start they have always been “low” on money but when Rex wins it big in Las Vegas he spoils the kids with little souvenirs’ and big meals that they are usually not used of. But the children get a real sense of how money works when they are older in Welch, West Virginia.
Jeannette’s first with money was when her mother had to go to Charleston for college classes. As Jeannette say’s “Before mom left, she gave me two hundred dollars. That was plenty, she said, to buy food for Brian and Maureen, and me for two months and pay the water and electricity bills. I did the math. It came out to twenty five dollars a week, or little over three-fifty a day. I worked up a budget and calculated that we could indeed squeak by if I made extra money babysitting. Pg. 209” Jeannette walls is 13 years old and she has to take care of her entire family’s money budget. I do not think I would have been able to do that at thirteen years old I am terrible at math. She countered one main problem during this learning experience with money…Her

Big, smooth, shiny, luxurious, polished. Comfortable, serene, extravagant - the glass castle. In the memoir, The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, the image of the glass Castle was Jeannette’s symbol of trust in her dad that he would stop drinking and strike it rich to get them out of poverty, so that the family could live a better life. Jeannette’s father was an alcoholic and her mom was unmotivated. The family moved around frequently while living on their dad’s low paying series of odd jobs. While still believing in the glass castle and her father, Jeannette grapples with the struggles of a lower social class, such as hunger and bullying from other kids and her parents, which implements the mentality of shooting for bigger dreams despite…

In addition, The Glass Castle, “Poverty in America Is Mainstream”, and “Number Of Homeless Children In America Surges To All-Time High: Report” all have a similar author’s purpose. Jeannette Walls’s purpose of writing her memoir is to teach readers to achieve their dreams and not let their past hold them back. Especially, she describes her house as a compact residence that is located on a steep hillside. The front of the house includes a drooping porch, which is supported by spindly cinder-block pillars. It has been a long time since someone has painted it (Walls 150). Evidently, Jeannette Walls has had many obstacles while growing, but she does not let them stop her from prospering throughout her life. She decides she would like to move to…

The physical struggles mentioned above also come together to form the large struggle of finaical insecurity. Walls expresses in the novel that she along with the rest of her family went without food for weeks because of the lack of funds. Jeannette describes a scence where in her elementary school bathroom she would pick out the leftover food that the other children would throw out. Jeannette shows her lack of understanding when her peers “tossed away all this perfectly good food; apples, hard-boiled eggs, packages of peanut-butter crackers, sliced pickles, half-pint cartons of milk, cheese sandwiches with just one bite taken out because the kid didn’t like the pimentos in the cheese” (173). She points out that sometimes there was more food in the trash then she could of eaten, this is when she begins to take some of the food to her brother to ensure that he was eating as well, but she does not take any home for her mother. With the state of the Walls’ finaicial insecurity comes the the undeniable fact that they were unable to pay rent. Therefore the Walls family moved quite often to avoid the bill collecters or as her father…

rental car and hotel room with two beds. Consequently, I came up with a plan to sell dinners to family members and friends. In addition, family members and friend told others about my seafood dinners. For example, crab cakes, shrimp salad, and lake trout were the main course on the menu along with potatoes salad, coleslaw, collard greens, and corn. Also for desert, I served pineapple up side down cake, chocolate chocolate chip cake, and pound cake. My dinners varied from $15.00 to $21.00. As a result, I made enough money to pay all my expenses for the trip. My family and friends enjoyed my cooking so much they asked me to do this on a weekly basis but I decided to do it monthly.…
