Compare and Contrast of Romeo and Juliet and Gnomeo and Juliet The film, Gnomeo and Juliet, is similar to, yet different from the play,” Romeo and Juliet”. Gnomeo and Juliet is the kid version of the dramatic, double suicide play by William Shakespeare. The characters and the setting are both different from and similar to the original. There are also many deletions. The characters in both versions have similar and different traits. One of the most changed characters is Tybalt. In the play, he was a respected, skilled, and in-shape person; however in the film, he is a cruel, hated, fat old man. Through all of the differences, they are both are still hot heads. Gnomeo has a more childish idea of love than Romeo, but they both get Juliet. The Settings of the play and the film also have many similarities and differences. In the play, everything takes place in the city of Verona, Italy. However in the film, everything takes place on Verona Street, in the gardens of the Montague’s and Capulet’s houses. In both the play and the film, are two separate groups of people, the Montagues and the Capulets. They’ve had a feud for a long time and don’t even remember why. There are also many deletions in the film that were in the original play. First of all, the prologue was cut short. There is not a Lady Capulet nor is there a King Montague. Mercutio was not there for Tybalt to kill, or to curse both houses with a plague. Friar Lawrence does not make any potions, and he doesn’t give that much advice. Also, at the end of the film, Gnomeo and Juliet don’t commit suicide. All of the characters in the film have very different personality traits than in the play. The Setting has changed drastically from being in an entire city to being in two gardens. Also with all of the deletions, the story line has become more kid appropriate than adult. Even with all of the huge changes, the film is still good and legitimate.
