Compare And Contrast Memento
The critically acclaimed film, Memento directed by Christopher Nolan explores the consciousness and unconsciousness of a man who suffers from short-term memory loss. Inspired by Jonathan Nolan’s narrative, Memento Mori, both mediums and interpretations use complex and confusing narrative structures to emphasize the tragedy and seriousness of the debilitating condition. Since the film is inspired by the narrative there are multiple similarities that can be found in connection to the short story. Though there are similarities, there are more differences and these differences between the two interpretations allows both narratives to be distinctly unique from each other. Specifically, both the film and the short narrative are based on the life …show more content…
Specifically, the additions of other individual’s narratives in the film are the most contrasting difference. The short story purely focuses on the narrative of Earl, while the film focuses on Leonard and the additional narratives of Natalie and Teddy. The introduction of these two characters changes the narrative drastically. Overall, Natalie and Teddy further complicate Leonard’s condition. We see both characters manipulating and taking advantage of Leonard for their own personal motives and intentions. Because this happens, the tragedy of Leonard condition is more apparent because the viewer has to see how others interact or treat him and his mental state. Another major difference between the two mediums would be how the dialogue and narrative speaking is structured. In the short story, Earl is the only one speaking alongside the third objective narration. While the film, has Leonard speaking alongside other storylines and the third objective narration seen in the text is replaced completely. In addition to that, the film utilizes exterior black and white flashbacks and interior monologues which provide more detail to Leonard’s scenario and

One of the biggest differences I saw between the two was the arrangement of the story. Dubus’ written version starts out in the middle at Frank’s funeral and the movie starts the story from the beginning with Frank and his lover Mary Ann (Natalie) running in a field. The film gives you more of a sense of the characters, their emotions, and the relationships they share with one another, while the written story gives you the view from Matt’s perspective only. The movie showed a lot more of the background details such as: the father-son bond between Matt and Frank, and the loving bond between Frank and Mary Ann. The story proceeded to show more of Matt’s feelings and internal thoughts on a different level then the film, which displayed very little interaction between him and his son in their lifetime. “It seemed to Matt that from the time Mary Ann called weeping to tell him until now, a Saturday night in september, sitting in the car with Willis, parked beside Strout’s car, waiting for the bar to close, that he had not so much moved through his life as wandered through it, his spirit like a dazed body bumping into furniture and corners. He had always been a fearful father; when his children were young. at the start of each summer he though of them drowning in a pond or the sea, and he was relieved when he came home in the evening and they were there; usually that relief was his only acknowledgment of his fear, which he never spoke of , and which he controlled within his heart” (100). Another difference that made the movie more personal was by not having…

There are many differences between the movie and book “Of Mice and Men” the director, Gary Sinies, was the of the movie and the author of the book was John Steinbeck. The two men had their different views on the story and put in in a way to entertain people. There are some scenes in the movie to add some more character to the person and fill in some missing holes. These elements create a provoking influence improving the film over the short story. Despite the stories attempts to overcome the film’s ability to succeed in creating an impact in elements including setting, characters and plot, the film created a greater impact in comparison to the stories mediocre impact. Clearly throughout both works, the film shined brighter than the story when it comes to the impact that they unleashed upon the…

There are no huge differences between the two, but the movie does focus on different aspects of Minny’s life. For example, the novel does not put so much emphasis on Minny’s relationship with Leroy that movie does. The movie also seemed to focus on the important friendship between Minny and Aibileen. The novel, however, tends to aim focus at their separate stories and experiences. Overall, I believe the movie did a pretty good job with the portrayal of Minny’s character and circumstances.…

The last difference that I'm going to talk about is the themes, or main points, of the book versus the movie. The book was mainly about the hardships that people go through and about the fixing gaps between the rich and the poor. The book expressed the characters emotions and feelings, and the tone is melodramatic and a bit sad. In the movie, however, I don't even…

While there are numerous similarities between the two versions, there are also many differences. One of the differences is the mood. The mood of the play is dark, romantic, sad, and dramatic. While the play has a few puns, the main focus of the play is to present a sad, depressing story. The movie is much lighter and happier until the ending. The movie displays quite a few puns and the characters are always laughing or joking around. The play tries to focus on the dramatic and sad points while the movie tries to focus more on the happier aspects.…

From the narrative perspective, there lies many differences while there is minimal difference in style. The narrative differences focus on character classification and location. The style difference focuses on the format. Starting with narrative differences, the audience can see a difference in location and character classification. In “The Minority Report,” the location is set to New York City while in the film Minority Report, the locations vary because crime does not occur in one place rather all over the country thus the police officer (John Anderton) must travel to prevent crimes; also in Dick’s story, the protagonist is portrayed as old while in Spielberg’s film, he is a young man who is fit for his job. Although there are many other difference, listing all would be impossible; however, there is one other crucial difference that lies in the descriptive style. A descriptive style is one in which the author’s focus is on describing something in detail, whether that something is a character or event. Through the usage of sub-plots, Spielberg exposes Andertons’s character and past, enabling readers are to get an idea of the main…

These two works can be compared because in both of them, one of the main characters is mentally ill. The woman in The Yellow Wallpaper is mentally ill, and her husband does not believe her when she tells him there are shadows in the wallpaper. When Blanche tells Stella about Stanley raping her, Stella does not believe her. These two characters are compared for not only being mentally ill, but also for making claims that no one believes. Although Stanley did rape Blanche, Stella does not believe her. In comparison, the woman in The Yellow Wallpaper see figures in the wallpaper, but her husband does not believe…

There were a few changes that were made to make a smooth transition from stage to film, but there were many things that stayed the same. The plot of both versions was basically the same. The play and film centers on Father Flynn, Sister James, and Sister Aloysius. Sister Aloysius is convinced that Father Flynn has acted inappropriately around the male students at the school, and Sister James is the naïve young teacher that wants to see the best in everyone and tries her hardest to believe that the allegations are not true. The plot of both stories shows how Sister Aloysius tries to find out whether or not Father Flynn has been inappropriate with one boy in particular, Donald Muller, who also happens to be the only black student at the school.…
