The Necklace. The Necklace takes place in Paris, France. The main characters are Mathilde and her Husband. Mathilde is bored and wants to do something fun. Her husband brings home an invitation for a party. It doesn’t make her happy because she doesn’t have anything to wear. Her husband gives her money to buy a new dress and she borrows a necklace from her friend, but the necklace gets lost. Mathilde and her husband spend ten years working to pay the necklace off. The irony of the story is the necklace was FAKE!
The Gift of the Magi. Della is worried that she does not have enough money to buy her husband Jim a Christmas present. She decides to sell her hair and buy him a chain for his watch. Jim comes home from work and he is shocked o find out that Della’s hair is gone. Jim gives Della the present of combs for her hair and Della gives Jim a chain for his watch. The irony is that he doesn’t have his watch and she doesn’t have her hair.
Ways that the two stories are similar is that both of the main characters in each story are either melodramatic, they freak out, or they’re overrated about something that has happened. In both stories they have a tragic “big day”. In both stories the families are poor and have shabby things. There are lots of tears in both stories. They both have to make choices about buy or selling things.
Ways that the two stories are different in the Necklace both characters are irresponsible and in the Gift of the Magi both of the characters are both really responsible and caring. Another way they are different is that in the Necklace the main character is very very selfish or greedy and in the Gift of the Magi both characters are unselfish and very caring of each other.
These stories both had many similarities and differences; however, I like the Gift of the Magi better because the characters both sold their most prized possessions to buy something that their loved one really wanted. The tragedy and the irony of both stories could have been avoided if, they as couples, had just communicated with one another and told the truth. Both stories capture the lesson of sacrificing for the ones you love.
