For the compare and contrast essay, you will want to focus on either compare (similarities) or contrast (differences). I personally recommend contrasting, as it is often easier. You will be using the point-by-point method and you will have toform a definitive thesis that is argumentative in nature. This will help you to get away from the traditional listing of similarities and differences and not having a cohesive essay with a purpose. Format of this essay For this essay, you will be writing a coherent Comparison and/or Contrast Essay. This essay must have a minimum of six paragraphs and must not exceed ten paragraphs (each body paragraph needs at least 5 sentences in it intro and conclusion 4-5 sentences). The topic of your essay needs to be a comparison/contrast of a movie or television show to a. real life (Think Ten Things I Hate About You) or b. its original book form and content. Introduction -Includes a first sentence that Leads In the reader -Introduces your topic in general -Has a thesis as the last sentence Body Paragraphs (4) -Coherent paragraphs that support or prove your thesis statement -Include well thought out transitions to take us from one idea to another and one paragraph to another -Include specific details and description -Focus on the items you are comparing or contrasting. Conclusion -BRIEFLY reiterates the topic of the essay -Goes beyond summarizing by appealing to the readers emotions, rationale, or beliefs -Can also call the reader to action. -Always, always, leaves the reader with something to think about.
