4. Compare and contrast the dramatic function of deception in two plays. The two plays that are going to be compared are ‘Macbeth’ and “Old Story Time”. Macbeth is written by a well-known dramatist by the name of William Shakespeare. Old Story Time is written by one of Jamaica’s best playwrights Trevor Rhone. ‘Macbeth’ is often said to be one of Shakespear’s most powerful tragedies. Shakespeare wrote Macbeth between 1603 and 1607. Shakespeare died at age 52 on April 23, 1616.‘Macbeth’ entails the titular character named Macbeth who has the desire to be king. He is told by three witches that he will become king but in order to become king he has to commit several murders. Despite the witches prophesy Macbeth was still a little reluctant to kill Duncan. Macbeth’s wife, Lady Macbeth was in favour of him being king so she persuaded him to kill Duncan. Macbeth found it hard to say no to his wife because he felt like it was important to prove to his wife that he was a man and no task was too difficult for him to carry out. Macbeth ended up killing Duncan with the assistance from his wife. Throughout the course of the play Macbeth hired three murders to kill several persons in the play. Macbeth gave orders to his murders to kill Macduff’s wife and children. When Macduff received the news that his wife and children were killed he was deeply sadden and he vows to take revenge. Prince Malcolm, Duncan’s son formed an army to challenge Macbeth’s forces and Macduff joined in. Lady Macbeth committed suicide. When Macbeth heard the news of his wife’s death, he was sad and his feelings could be described as that of a downbeat. Despite Lady Macbeth’s death Macbeth still decided to go to war.
