The older boys, like Ralph, Jack, Roger, Simon, Piggy, and some of the hunter that Jack finds. These boys act as the “adults” of the island, they start by building a fire on top of the mountain to use as a smoke signal to flag down ships passing by. They also, (with the idea from Piggy yelling) start to create shelter. In earlier chapters, Piggy wanted to create shelter but the others were not as worried about it as he was. Now, the older boys did create shelters for everyone to live. They also look for food, they hunt, kill, and eat pigs that are living on the island. There are also berries that they find and which they use as a source of food. They do make their needs a priority by making these decisions and taking these actions. All of them are interested in exploring the island, they work together to explore the untrodden land, to find more food, places to create shelter, and a place to create more signals for help. “...fear can’t hurt you any more than a dream. There aren’t any beasts to be afraid of on this island...serve you right if something didn’t get you, you useless lot of cry-babies”. This quote shows that the littles ones appear to be useless in the eyes of the older children that are there. They seem to get in the way and since they are afraid, it gets in the way of exploration.
