INTRODUCTION
Domino's Pizza and Pizza hut are American restaurant chains and international franchise pizza delivery corporations. Pizza hut is the largest pizza chain in the United States followed by dominoes. Pizza hut has 5,139 store locations in 94 other countries and territories around the world. Domino’s has more than 10,000 corporate and franchised stores in 70 countries. Presently dominoes have 7 stores in 7 different locations in Goa and pizza hut has only 1 store in Goa.
Applying the 5 forces model:
1. CUSTOMERS: to satisfy their customers both dominoes and pizza hut used a similar kind of strategies i.e. localized the menu and even revised the prices in order to cater to the multi-cultured local population. Customers in dominoes are mostly from the middle income group or students whose disposable incomes are relatively low; also location of the restaurant makes a lot of difference as many people come to dine due to strategic location.
2. Substitutes: there are many substitutes which are available to choose with respect to the fast food industry some of them are
Café coffee day
KFC
Subways
Chinese restaurants Especially in Calangute where all four i.e. dominoes, pizza hut, KFC, café coffee day and even Chinese restaurants are there it all depends upon the customers where they want to have. They have to improve their services and come up with new and innovative marketing strategies in order to attract customers. Some of the strategies like advertising, home delivery, revision in menu and costs etc. are used by most of them.
3. Suppliers: supplies till now were not a problem. But with the advent of rising food costs, suppliers are not ready to supply items at the normal rate. Thus both dominoes and Pizza hut has to either increase the menu costs or reduce the operational costs to recover.
4. Rival firms: presently dominoes’ main rival is pizza hut. In Goa dominoes has a greater customer base than Pizza hut because of its

    Competing in the market today can be very complicated. “The Pizza industry is a 30+ Billion per year industry ("Facts," 2010)” Maintaining a steady position in this industry is very imperative to us being successful in such a competitive market environment. Domino’s Pizza Inc. is the market leader in the United States pizza delivery and second largest pizza company in the world based on number of units. The company offers a wide variety of pizza products as well as pasta, bread sticks, boneless chicken and wings, desserts and soft drinks. As of the beginning of this year, 2012, Domino’s had 394 company-owned stores and 4,513 franchised Domino’s units in the U.S. and 4,835 franchised stores internationally. Domino’s strategy is to use its superior supply-chain to provide its franchises with lost cost inputs so the franchises may focus on sales and service. Through the online world, Domino’s customers began to share their dissatisfaction with Domino’s products, such as pizza lacked taste and quality and poor quality delivery pizzas. Over the past 3-5 years Domino’s has made an effort to improve the palatability of their core products, and in 2009 introduced a new and redesigned crust recipe, fresh ingredients, a new sauce, and real shredded cheese. This effort, along the successive marketing campaigns has increased brand loyalty and customer preferences which has had a profound effect on increases in revenue and number of franchise openings. In recent years, how ever, Dom ino’s ha s com e un der c onsumer fire and, although masked by international revenue growth of 13.2 percent for the same period, the company posted a 16.3 percent decrease in domestic revenue from year-end 2005 through year-end 2009. While the economic recession could certainly be blamed at least in part for its lagging financial performance,2 Domino’s knew that this dip was more than just an economic indicator. In fact, the news reaching the executive suite indicated that Domino’s was suffering from a negative reputation in the marketplace. Central to consumer complaints was that Domino’s served low quality pizza with inferior ingredients that lacked taste. To stay competitive, Domino’s addressed both the taste deficiency complaints and the growing preference for fresh products by introducing a re-formulated pizza recipe in late 2009.
