Helping my community is extremely significant to me, so I participate in many activities, in and out of school, that support our community, such as BETA club or Girl Scouts. In these activities I have learned that to…
Community policing is, in essence, a collaboration between the police and the community that identifies and solves community problems. With the police no longer the sole guardians of law and order, all members of the community become active allies in the effort to enhance the safety and quality of neighborhoods. Community policing has far-reaching implications.…
Community policing is a proven method for lowering the crime rate in the United States. Community policing has been a law enforcement strategy for nearly thirty years. In august of 1994, the United States Department of Justice formed the Community Policing Consortium. The goal of this consortium was to develop a framework for understanding and implementing community policing in neighborhoods across America. The consortium consisted of representatives from the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the National Sheriff’s Association, the Police Executive Research Forum, and the Police Foundation. According to the consortium, community policing consists of two core components, community partnership and problem solving (Gaffigan, 1994, p. 13). Community partnership focuses on a mutual trust between local police departments and their community’s residents. In order to facilitate this mutual trust police should encourage residents to come forth with any information they may have. In turn police departments should send representatives to speak with neighborhood groups, participate in business and civic events, work with social agencies, and take part in educational and recreational programs for school children (Gaffigan, 1994, p.13). The consortium also encourages police departments to perform duties outside of the normal law enforcement scope. Some of these duties include helping accident or crime victims, providing emergency medical services, helping dissolve domestic and neighborhood conflicts, working with residents and local businesses to improve neighborhood conditions, and providing a model of citizenship (Gaffigan, 1994, p.13). The second core component, problem solving, is the elimination and prevention of crimes. A number of underlying factors affect the way in which this can be accomplished. “These conditions might include the characteristics of the people involved (offenders, potential victims, and others), the social setting in which these people…
I reluctantly woke up at 7am that morning and commuted to DePaul University for my Discover Chicago class. This class focuses on visiting communities and people who are attempting to eradicate the reputation of violence in Chicago and ultimately save lives. Today’s agenda had us visiting the Precious Blood Ministry of Reconciliation in a dangerous South Side Chicago neighborhood called Back of the Yards. This neighborhood borders Englewood Chicago which is infamous for its crime rates…
Community policing is explained as a collaboration of community and the police working together to help identify and solve criminal activities. Additionally, the whole concept behind it is to promote public safety and to enhance the quality of life within the neighborhoods in which we reside in. Community policing is composed of two major components which are community partnership and problem solving. Community policing is a program that was initially started in the 1940’s. All of the support that was released for this program was materialized actually in the 1980’s. One of the main goals if not the most important goal was to bring in the law enforcement closer to their local public to help better establish relationships and partnerships. They would build these relationships and partnerships with local businesses, group organizations, local residents and social service agencies. The whole reason behind building these relationships was to help each other in the long run of having a better understanding of what was actually needed by the community and to address local problems. (Community Justice, pg. 26-7) Like we discussed earlier, partnerships and relationships are very important for community policing, but another topic for it would be organizational transformation. An easy to understand description of organizational transformation would be the alignment of organizational management, structure, personnel, and information systems that support community partnerships and problem solving. In my own words community policing is a better way to help our police force from being in multiple places at one time. For instance neighborhood watch programs are a great asset to have when you have the local community monitoring actions and situations that are occurring. With this type of program established, it gives the local police a chance to venture off into other locations to ensure they are patrolling in other…
As I’ve learned in previous chapters and during one of my essays, community justice is a type of reform. One of its focus’s is to try and prevent crime. It also embraces the nonpolice functions of adjudication, sanctioning, and correcting (Clear, Hamilton, Cadora, 2011). Traditional correctional functions include reforms for offenders such as parole and probation.…
Volunteering is very important because it helps a lot to make the country a better place, it also gives something from the person to make them feel good about themselves to no they have helped and done it in their own free time. Something named the compact is to do with volunteering it is where the government have an agreement with the voluntary and community sector which outlines a way of working that improves the relationship for mutual advantage, in other words helping each other as best as they can. The Compact offers improved funding processes, clear consultation standards, and an overall improvement in working relationships. So organisations shouldn’t wait until things go wrong before using it, as its always there to help as best as possible.…
In this writing one will view the issues of community policing, problem-solving policing, the federal governments integration into community policing. Communities across America face an epidemic that is far beyond illness and close to home. There are many questions that come to one’s mind when an ordinary citizen is working with the police to help control their community. Crime is unable to become extinct but may become well tamed, and the United States always has had issues that have yet diminished. Take a look and ask yourself have or are you making a difference in your community.…
School and education is something that most everyone has an opinion on. Opinions are okay to have. Education is the method in how people gain a larger sense of knowledge with the help of curriculum, teachers, administration and peers. This is something that is very important in peoples, even though some might disagree. It does not just help students become more book smart but it does help them become more social smart, street smart and able to handle situations. Now with all of this, service learning should be involved and it is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities (National Service Learning). The problem is that communities do not come together as a whole which needs to be fixed so students are more responsible and understanding and it all can happen by getting a service coordinator.…

In the past few years I have observed that many students have little or no experience volunteering. I would like to hear from each student in a 900 word essay the following: Most students state they want to help people? How do you know that if you have never volunteered? Please explain in great detail. Merely wanting to help and be kind is not enough. If you really want to help people, what are your reasons for not having volunteered in some manner, to at the very least get a "feel" for actually helping people. I look forward to your responses. You can post your response in course sites. I will also observe many of your over the next few months to see if you seek out opportunities to volunteer!…
I believe that it is for the good of character if all high school students should have to do at least forty hours of community service throughout their high school career. I will explain why it is such a great idea for this to pass in all high school.…
In a city where gang violence wreaks havoc and calamity occurs often, one neighborhood has the fortunate ability to end gang violence all together. By making the decision to close down a single house among many, the city of Sunnyside, WA along with its police department, have (Courtney)achieved their duty as Act Utilitarian’s. Their actions resulted in substantial consequences that have been shown to maximize the greater good of the entire community.…

Being a nominee, I realize that the National Honor Society is an honor to be in itself. Since The National Honor Society is dedicated to helping the needy, children, the elderly and non-profit organizations. I feel that this is the right society for me because since I was a child, I have been noted for my exceptional empathy. My parents have always instilled in me a sense of responsibility and care for others. I feel obligated to utilize my gifts in an organization as prestigious as the National Honor Society. Over the past years as a scholar, I believe that I have demonstrated all four principles: scholarship, leadership, character, and service.…
