Volunteering for service hours changed my outlook on life. I worked with the Hydrocephalus Association in both eleventh and twelfth grade. The Hydrocephalus Association focuses on three things community, clarity, and cure. Hydrocephalus is a condition defined by an abnormal, excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the cavities of the brain. Some people with this condition can live a normal life being unnoticeable while other have difficulties. The association works on awareness to find a cure, clarity in helping families further understand the condition, and a community which will always be supportive. Service hours can sometimes be a hassle but once I started volunteering with that association it became fun because I was…
The community service accomplishment that I am most proud of is the work I did to do-nate school supplies to children in need. In order have enough money to donate school supplies, The Keystone Club planned to organize a talent show. I helped sell…
Mentoring and working with troubled youth at Academy Park High School was a really interesting experience. Prior to this opportunity, I felt as though I would be able to change those I worked with and give them the same mindset that I had. After working with these students and getting to learn about their lives and their challenges I soon realized that one mindset is not the only mindset that one should have. I quickly realized how much of an impact one's background could have on their entire view of life. This was a really amazing volunteer opportunity that really helped open my eyes to…
Community service is vital to the life and survival of all communities. It is the role of all citizens to stand up and to be active members of their communities whether it be through activities, such as volunteering at retirement homes, schools, or local churches. Through my continued efforts to serve my community in college, I hope that I am able to benefit my community. Whether it be those who utilize the public library or little kids in grade school that need assistance with their homework, I will surely be able to serve…
The results of my hard work and the positive impact it creates on the people around me is a reward in itself. One of the most memorable instances in which I contributed to the greater good was during the summer of my freshman year where I volunteered at West Pines Community Church. That summer, myself and about 50 other volunteers set out to make an impactful difference in the…
How has serving my community helped me become the person I am today? In 2014, I was installed into a social service club called Debs. I feel that likewise I have changed since I pledged over a year ago in many ways.…
Community service means much more to me than completing hours for a class or for a more appealing résumé. It builds character, leadership, and integrity. It transforms regular humans in to leaders and more passionate citizens. Community service also stands as a foundation builder to become a more…
At an early age, I became fully aware of the importance of social justice and the correlation that activism had in combating social issues. I learned how much societal complexes directly affect our lives, and how that can make you're life a lot easier or a lot…
As long as I can remember service to others was always encouraged by my family and teachers. For example, I helped teachers with the intent of lightening their load of work so they can be able to go home earlier. Things like this make me proud because I am able to help others, and to bring a smile to their faces. My excuse to avoid community service was that I always thought that school was all about homework and getting good grades to be on the top 20 of your class. Truth is I have always overlooked this people thinking they were being lazy for not working, but through this community service I learned that each and everyone around the world is fighting their own battles and we all deal with them the best way we can. I am proud of myself because I went to that community service and learned about this people who I had always stereotyped by their actions, community service has encouraged me to actively listen and learn from others, to walk alongside my neighborhood and to build new…
I was involved in many service learning experiences all throughout highschool. I was on National Honors Society and we would ring bells for Salvation Army and adopt children around Christmas time. We often volunteered at schools to help watch children, while parents were receiving help in finding careers or when they were being helped in some other manner. However, my favorite service learning that I was involved in was helping coach Special Olympics. This service learning is one of the reasons I am becoming a teacher, and one of the main reasons why my focus is Special Education. I coached my team in soccer, basketball, and track. I loved every minute of it. I spent more time with those kids than I have with any other service learning combined. I coached them starting my sophomore year all the way until I left for college. It was hard leaving my team and I am upset that I cannot go back and see them more often. Service learning has made a huge impact on my life and is something that everyone should become involved with. When you find that one cause that you are passionate about helping with it can transform your life like it did…
Having the opportunity to make new, diverse friends around the community impacted me as a person. The people I met not only included the people I served, but also included the people I worked alongside of me in the food pantry. Since I volunteered at the same day and time every week, I was able to become familiar with many new people. In fact, many of these people were even able to connect to my life. One day I had a conversation with a man I volunteered with numerous times whose name was Steve.…
I joined a community outreach program where we went to a surrounding town’s housing complex and helped the kids after school with homework. I worked with a student, who when I started was in kindergarten, his name was Jordian. When I first started going he could barely sit still in a chair, he could barely count 5 and was not close to reading. When I left my senior year he would come in and mostly everyday sit and start his homework. He was now adding without much difficulty and starting to learn multiplication. During reading time he would sit down and work on his reading. Helping the kids not only learn but make a positive impact on their lives is something I will keep with me forever.…
The first was the comfort I offered to a 1 year old little girl who was unable to stop crying. The second was previously mentioned about how I could encourage the boys that they had the potential to succeed. The benefits I have gained from this service learning experience have been extremely beneficial to me as a freshmen in college. One of the things I learned from this is that many people need all sorts of different resources so that they can live day to day, along with that no matter how bad I think my day may be sometimes or how bad of a life I have that I really am not that bad off. I am forever grateful for the opportunity I was involved…
Volunteering has driven me to becoming a better person. It has taught me essential life skills that will follow my footsteps for the rest of my life. I volunteer to give back to a community that has given me so much. The opportunities I have received throughout my life has given me motivation to be involved in my community. I am grateful for the help I received from others. I have always been challenged by members of my community to go above and beyond the expectations. Without the extra push, I would not be where I am today.…
My service learning experience was much different from any other I've ever had. It wasn't at all like an ordinary reading or writing assignment. It was an ongoing project that dealt with real life. I did my service learning at a women’s shelter in Chicago Illinois, called Inner Voice Homeless Shelter. Service Learning is an opportunity that only few fortunate students are able to participate in. I am very thankful that I have taken advantage of this opportunity. This whole experience has opened my eyes in many ways. Though I had been to orphanages before with my family and friends, it was my first visit to the women’s…
