Community In The Giver

The giver is about a perfect community. A community where nothing bad happens and everybody is the same. In the community there is a boy named Jonas. Jonas has been selected to be the Receiver Of Memories. Being the Receiver is a great honor because you have to keep all the community's memories and learn about what used to exist in the community. A utopia is a place where everything is perfect and nothing bad happens. A dystopia is the opposite of a Utopia because it is a place where everything is unpleasant or bad. The community is a Utopia. Jonas’s community is a Utopia because everybody follows the rules, nobody knows about death, everybody’s the same, and nobody lies. First of all Jonas’s community is a utopia because everybody listens to what they are told. In the community there are many rules that don’t allow you to make your own decisions.
Everybody in the community cannot see color in anything and everything is black and white to them. When Jonas was throwing an apple with Asher he start to see color. When he saw the color he knew he was different and would never be the same as he was ever again. When Jonas was throwing an apple with Asher he start to see color. Being the same as everyone with only a couple people seeing what color is really looks like is a good way to balance the community. If people are different it is harder to trust other people. When Jonas was selected he got a new rule that said he can lie. When he got that rule it made him very different from everyone else in the community except for the Giver. “Lily did not lie. His parents did not lie. No one did. Unless…….”(pg 89) The rule also made it harder to trust people because he didn’t know who was lying or not.
