Community Center Observation
Everyone has a first impression when they encounter someone in a new setting. When parents, guests, and residents first walk in the residence hall, it is my responsibility as a Community Center Assistant to make them feel welcome. I can make them feel welcome by having a good attitude and engaging in a positive conversation. I will be willing to answer any questions that they may have about Towson University and its beautiful campus by listening to the people and interacting with them. If I see any resident in a bad mood, I can converse with them to cheer them up. I will be a good listener in which I can help them feel better assuring them that everything will be alright.

There are several factors that contribute to me wanting to be a Community Assistant. One is that a goal of mine has been to forever influence Barrett. I believe that through the Barrett Residential Council and becoming a Community Assistant; I will achieve this goal. I also want to be a Barrett Community Assistant because of Kylie Kilian and James Orr (the CA’s of Agave 1), who have helped me transition into the collegiate environment. They are two of the kindest, most helpful people I know of, and if I am even a fraction of the CA’s that they are there would be no issues! However, I have chosen to apply of my own volition; due to me being qualified for the role of a CA, as well as taking on the job as a challenge to be a positive impact in people’s lives. There are three traits that are essential to be a Community Assistant that I have. First, I am a strong believer in helping those around me in times of distress. Secondly, I have always thrived in a leadership position and being an influence on the incoming class would be a wonderful adventure. Finally, I am willing…

I recognise this assessment is ongoing and involved weekly observations to identify progress and monitor the services. I made a record of each visit and reported any concerns to my manager (SW one, Walker 2011). I noted at times my intervention did not improve the situation as it took some time for the services to be allocated. Upon reflection, I could have been more open with N at the start about my concerns as her feedback reflected an inconsistency in my approach. Kemshall (2002) argues that social work is predominantly concerned with handling and assessing risk, as opposed to focusing on social need and justice. It should be highlighted that N may have feel structurally oppressed due to her mental health and not being appreciated for the challenges she is facing (Thompson 2007). I now recognise I may have been focusing on the immediate risk in the home and not realising the underlying cause of concern, her mental health. However, I was concerned at the potential neglect the children were facing and it was decided…
